Utah's Primary Election 2002
Voters go to the polls Tuesday to vote in Utah's primary election.

  • First District
Rob Bishop declared victory for the Republican nomination in the first Congressional District. With all of the precincts reporting, Bishop had almost 60 percent of the primary vote to Kevin Garn's 40 percent.

On the Democratic side, advertising executive Dave Thomas won over education consultant Donald Dunn.

Bishop and Thomas will face off in November to succeed 22-year veteran Representative Jim Hansen.

  • Second District
Former state legislator John Swallow won the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District after a razor-thin race against Tim Bridgewater. For most of Tuesday night, Swallow and Bridgewater stayed within percentage points of each other.

"With any kind of a race like this, it's going to be close," Swallow said Tuesday night. "It's a horse race."

  • Voter Turnout
Interest in Tuesday's Primary election was low statewide. Political pollster Dan Jones estimated statewide turnout at about seven percent. But in Salt Lake County, some precincts reported turnout as low as one percent. Details From Political Specialist Richard Piatt...

  • Candidates Urge Utahns To Vote
Predictions for turnout are not good for Tuesday's primary election. But six of the candidates running for congress this year are working hard to change that. Go to story...

  • Poll Shows Candidates in Dead Heat
Two things are making a difference in this Primary election-- Turnout is expected to be low, and, according to a new KSL-TV/Deseret News poll, most candidates are in a dead heat. Go to story...

  • No Big Change Expected in Legislature
Don't expect anything momentous to happen to the Utah Legislature's makeup June 25. Of the 91 legislative races, just 13 involve primaries, all of them in the House of Representatives. Twelve of the 13 are Republican primaries, so while the faces in the Legislature may change, it's not likely the body's conservative bent will change much. Go to story...
