Issues: Cook and Eskelsen
Here's a look at how the two candidates for the 2nd congressional district
differ on the issues, according to Project Vote Smart:
Education
Eskelsen supports national standards in reading and math.
Cook wants local control of education, allowing parents to use tax-free
savings accounts to send children to any school.
Federal Crime
Cook wants to broaden the use of the death penalty for federal crimes, and
build more federal prisons.
Eskelsen favors vocational and job related training for inmates and more
community policing programs.
Abortion
Eskelsen says abortions should always be legally available.
Cook says only in cases of incest, rape or if the woman's life is
endangered.
Taxes
Cook wants to replace the U.S. tax structure with a flat income tax,
eliminate the I.R.S. and institute a national sales tax.
Eskelsen does not support changes in tax laws.
Priorities
Eskeleson lists her top two legislative priorities as safer streets and
schools, and improving education.
Cook says his top priorities are replacing the current federal tax code and
reforming and improving health care.
