Hundreds of students took part in a pre-election rally, an effort to make voting a way of life for Utah's younger residents. But not far away in the Capitol rotunda the mood was much more somber as Republicans rallied around one of their own. House Speaker Mel Brown now faces allegations that he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, and that he discussed the possibility of a future job at U.S. West with a U.S. West lobbyist. Rep. Tammy Rowan/(R) Orem: "IT'S EASY TO MAKE ACCUSATIONS WITH PUBLIC OFFICIALS ESPECIALLY WITHOUT TIME TO DEFEND YOURSELF A DAY BEFORE THE ELECTION AND YOU HAVE TO WONDER WHERE THIS CAME FROM." Speaker Brown has publically denied the allegations, but Democrats are calling for a full investigation. RRep. Dave Jones/(D) House: "THE ETHICS COMMITTEE OUGHT TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS ISSUE, TO SEE IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY KIND OF WRONGDOING, AND IF THERE ISN'T, THEN EXONERATE HIM. IF THERE IS, THEN WE NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT." In Salt Lake County, elections officials are dealing with their own last minute changes..far fewer requests for absentee ballots than expected. Nadine Wimmer, Political Specialist: "ALL OVER THE STATE, CAMPAIGN WORKERS ARE BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL, REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS HOPING TO GET OUT YOUR VOTE. NADINE WIMMER, KSL NEWS, SALT LAKE CITY."
