Spiders Invade Parts of Utah

If you don't like spiders, you might not want to pay attention to this next story. Or, on the other hand., you may need to pay attention so you know what places to avoid!

Like the new movie called "Eight Legged Freaks", Science Specialist Ed Yeates shows us an invasion of spiders--a real life invasion-- in a place close to you.

We may be lacking water this year, but these guys are literally flooding the Great Salt Lake Marina with offspring.

Thousands of spiders have set out banquet webs, feasting on millions of brine flies. Because of the drought, the lake has receded, uncovering acres of soggy mud for the flies to breed. More flies mean more spiders.

"WE HAVE A TEAM EFFORT OUT HERE. I WATCH HIS BACK, HE WATCHES MINE. HAVE I GOT ANYTHING ON ME?"

State Park crews have sprayed five times so far this season and haven't even made a dent in the population. Larry Modena says it's the worst he's seen.

LARRY MODENA, GREAT SALT LAKE STATE PARK MARINA: "I WENT INTO THE OFFICE TO ANSWER THE PHONE AND I HAD ONE ON MY NECK. AND YOU FLICK IT OFF. YOU JUST KIND OF GET USE TO THEM RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, YOU'RE KNEELING DOWN. THERE'RE SPIDERS AROUND YOU. YOU HAND SPRAY. THEY'RE CLIMBING UP FROM TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM THE SPRAY. OR THEY'RE SHOOTING A WEB CONNECTING TOWARD YOU."

On light poles, posts, boats and barges, they're everywhere. And if Modena leaves his truck parked out here a few days...

"OVER THE WEEKEND, I'LL COME BACK MONDAY MORNING, AND IT'S JUST WEBBED AND FULL OF DEAD BRINE FLIES AND SPIDERS. AND IF WE HAPPEN TO LEAVE THE WINDOW DOWN A BIT, WE ALWAYS HAVE FIVE OR SIX INSIDE THE CAB."

Most tourists take a quick look but won't eat lunch in the pavilion, moving on to someplace else - that's spider free.

And it's not just the Great Salt Lake.

ED YEATES, SCIENCE SPECIALIST: "ON THE WEST SIDE OF UTAH LAKE, MORE SPIDERS IN NUMBERS YOU WON'T BELIEVE. IN FACT, VERY FEW CAMPERS WOULD VENTURE INTO THESE TREES. THE WEBS ARE ALL AROUND ME, THROUGHOUT THE BRANCHES, AND SIX TO NINE FEET ABOVE MY HEAD."

Sometimes you can't even see the branches for the webs. But take heart. It's Nature's Way to leave them here, where the feast is!

MODENA: "MY WIFE MAKES ME TAKE MY COVERALLS OFF BEFORE I COME IN THE HOUSE, AND SHAKE 'EM OFF SO I DON'T BRING 'EM HOME."

Incidentally, most of the spiders are Orb Weavers and harmless to humans.
