Best Insect Repellents

Results of a new study may help you plan a better mosquito fighting strategy, for your Fourth of July outing.

Researchers in North Carolina, tested 16 repellents containing the chemical deet or plant based ingredients.

The study found deet- based products worked the best depending on their concentrations.

BEST BUG FIGHTERS

  1. "Off!" Deep Woods--5 hours
  2. Oil of Eucalyptus--2 hours
  3. Bite Blocker-- 1 1/2 hours
  4. Skin-So-Soft-- 20 minutes

"Off! Deep Woods" ... which contains more than 23 percent of the chemical... kept mosquitoes away for an average of five hours. The newer "Oil of Eucalyptus repellents... fite bite and repel" lasted an average of two hours. Bite Blocker for kids, which contains two percent soybean oil... lasted an hour and a half on average. Various Skin- So- Soft products... including those containing either the chemical IR3535 or plant based citronella ... kept the biting bugs away, for less than 20 minutes.

The study... is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
