New Specialist Shelley Osterloh Reporting The change in the weather means it's time to fire up the furnace.
And this year, the Questar gas company is requiring a special adjustment if you have your furnace serviced.
Most folks remember to change the filters on their furnace.
But if you have your furnace serviced... there is one other thing you should have done.
As the weather turns cool.... heating experts are taking more calls.
Each year home owners should change the air filters on the furnace... and make sure there are no boxes, papers or other debris near the pilot light... or vents.
And according to the Gas Company... if you call a heating technician, you should ask them to make an adjustment on your furnace and water heater to accept a new type of natural gas.
Dan Dearden/Esco Heating: IT'S BECAUSE QUESTAR IS CHANGING THE QUALITY OF THEIR GAS AND ITS GOING TO BE A LOWER BTU CONTENT AND SO THE ORIFICES AND THE FURNACE NEEDS TO BE SET UP TO BURN THIS NEW FUEL.
For 70 years Utahns have received an especially rich form of natural gas.
But the federal government has ordered a standardized blend --- one that has lower BTU's or less heat energy.
Steve Chapman/Questar Spokesperson: AND SO WE ARE SIMPLY TRYING TO GET OUR APPLIANCES IN THIS AREA IN LINE WITH THOSE NATIONAL SOURCES SO THAT THEY OPERATE MORE EFFICIENCY AND SAFELY WITH THE SUPPLIES THAT WE ARE NOW RECEIVING.
Once a furnace or water heater is adjusted... the technician puts a green sticker on it.
Dan Dearden/Esco Heating: THERE IS A SMALL POSSIBILITY THAT YOU COULD BE BURNING IMPROPERLY THAT COULD PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE.
Shelley Osterloh/reporter: NOW THERE IS NOT NEED TO PANIC ON THIS. THE ACTUALLY SWITCH WONT BE MADE FOR 4 OR 5 YEARS... BUT GAS EXPERTS RECOMMEND THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE YOUR FURNACE OR WATER HEATER CHECKED.. HAVE THE TECHNICIAN ALSO CHECK FOR THAT GREEN STICKER ADJUSTMENT.
This company charges 140 dollars to adjust both the furnace and water heater.
Most furnaces installed after 1998 have already been adjusted to this new standard.
You'll find a little pamplet in your Questar Bill this month that will tell you more about the green sticker.
