.CC Domain Names

Feb. 7, 2000

If you are at all computer literate, then you are well aware of the internet addresses that end with: .com, .net and .org. As News Specialist Keith McCord explains, get ready for .CC!

Our story begins in the Indian Ocean. Find Sumatra, then head southwest a few hundred miles to a place called the Cocos-Keeling islands! Population, only 650! Only a few square miles in size.

Looks like Gilligan's Island! Turns out this paradise may revolutionize the world wide web! It seems when the computer gurus were assigning internet domain names to various countries --like dot.com and dot.net here in the U.S. these islands got "dot-cc".

Since computers aren't a big priority here, the islanders now hired a marketing firm to make .cc available to the rest of the world.

Tom Sly/V-P Marketing Clear Channel Broadcasting: "AND IN THE ENTREPRENEURAL SPIRIT, THE 650 RESIDENTS OF THAT ISLAND DECIDED TO SELL THE RIGHTS."

Why is that such a big deal? Well, many of the internet names ending in .com are already being used. But, .cc is virtually wide open. Which means, there's a huge financial opportunity.

Anyone can register internet domain names--for a fee--and then later sell them to someone who really wants them!

SLY: "IT'S A MILLENIAL GOLD RUSH,. IT'S A CHANCE FOR THE EVERYDAY PERSON TO POSSIBLY BECOME THE NEW INTERNET MILLIONAIRE."

For the Cocos Keeling Islands this is huge! Every time someone pays the fee to register a dot-cc domain name--the islanders get the money!

"YOU KNOW, THESE SMALLER ISLANDS, IT'S A CHANCE FOR THEM TO GET INFRASTRUCTURE...TO GET REAL AMENITIES..THINGS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED...ROADS, WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS..AND THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE DOING WITH THIS MONEY."
