George W. Bush and Dick Cheney take their GOP team campaign on the road today.
They're heading to Wyoming, the state Cheney represented for a decade in Congress. Later in the week, the pair will do more campaigning to whip up enthusiasm for next week's Republican National Convention.
The two men already are setting a tone for their campaign. At a kick-off rally yesterday, both talked about "a compassionate conservative" message, repeating the phrase that Bush used often at the start of his campaign.
But Democrats already are starting to target the new GOP ticket as far-right conservative. They're pointing to Cheney's congressional voting record -- noting he opposed gun control, affirmative action and some tougher environmental controls.
Appearing on CNN's "Larry King Live," Cheney said he opposed some worthy programs because the country couldn't afford them.
