The power company calls in extra crews to get the electricity flowing again to thousands of homes.
Tuesday's powerful wind and rain storm blew down lines from Ogden to Provo, leaving tens of thousands of residents in the cold and dark.
The power was back on in most areas by Wednesday morning, but thousands of people, mainly in the Salt Lake valley, did without through much of the day.
Meantime, businesses and homeowners cleaned up debris. The high winds uprooted trees, blew off shingles, and brought branches crashing down. Law enforcement agencies across the Salt Lake valley were swamped with calls Tuesday, but there were no reports of injuries.
Winds gusted as high as 80 mph and up to an inch of rain fell as the fast-moving, late-afternoon thunderstorm swept across the Wasatch Front, catching many people by surprise.
Some of the stronger wind gusts Tuesday include:
- 84 mph at Lakeside
- 77 mph near Dugway
- 74 mph in Sandy
- 71 mph over the Great Salt Lake
- 68 mph
in Magna
- 63 mph in North Salt Lake
- 60 mph in the foothill area of Salt
Lake City.
