Utahns Dig Out From Record Storm
A set of snowstorms that began on Thanksgiving day dumped several feet of snow along the Wasatch Front. Check the right hand side of this page for links to information and resources.

Utahns continue digging out from a record storm that dumped more than two feet of snow on the Wasatch Front this weekend. The storm began Sunday, lightened up midday Monday, and cleared out on Tuesday.

Late Monday night, the National Weather Service cancelled a snow advisory for Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys, but added patchy dense fog to the forecast.

From Bountiful to Sandy, snow plow drivers struggle to clear the snow away Monday--easily more than two feet deep in places. For three days, the snow was constant--and a constant headache.

Officers spent Monday morning digging people's cars out and responding to accidents.

Though there are no fatalities reported--police agencies along the Wasatch Front respond to over 200 accidents.

Sgt. Phil Waters/Utah Highway Patrol: "WE CAN HANDLE IT. WE'VE GOT A LOT OF GUYS OUT. WE'RE REAL BUSY. TROOPERS ARE GOING FROM CRASH TO CRASH. WE HAVE MORE CARS IN DITCHES THAN WE HAVE CRASHES AND WE'RE PULLING THOSE OUT AS WE CAN."

Tuesday morning, about 300 people were still without power. During the height of the storm, 4,000 residents lost power.

Most of the power problems were due to downed tree limbs hitting power lines.

Meantime in the neighborhoods, everyone is digging out. But a reminder-- be careful while you're doing it!

Since the weekend, emergency room doctors at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful have treated nine people for injuries from snow blowers--mostly injuries to fingers.

Other hospitals report a slight increase in ER visits as a result of injuries from shoveling or clearing snow.

Most of us shouldn't try clearing all that snow off the roof. If it keeps piling up, some flat-topped structures may be at risk. But the risk of falling off a slick roof and breaking your neck is far greater than the roof collapsing.

The fire department also asks that if you have a fire hydrant in front of your house, please dig it out.

No "Snow Day" At School

Many school children and parents were surprised that even with a few feet of snow in some places, public schools held class as normal on Monday.

Education Specialist Nadine Wimmer reports.

Ski Resorts Opening

The snow is good news for Utah's ski resorts, many of which are open now. Check the Utah Skier's Report for information on that.
