Fatal Provo Canyon Accident
August 10, 2002--
Traffic in Provo Canyon and near Heber City was at a standstill for much of the afternoon, after a motorcycle crash killed a Utah County man. The crash occured about 1:30, a mile away from Deer Creek Reservoir in Wasatch County on state road 189. The 31-year-old driver of the motorcycle somehow lost control, drifted into the opposite direction of traffic, and was struck by an SUV pulling a trailer. Even though the man was wearing a helmet, he still died at the scene.
Sgt. Randall Richey/Utah Highway Patrol: "IN THIS CASE WE DON'T KNOW IF SPEED WAS A FACTOR. WE ARE GOING TO BE LOOKING INTO THAT. WE DON'T BELIEVE ALCOHOL WAS."
No one else was seriously hurt in the crash. Troopers shut the highway down for nearly two hours, causing long delays in both directions. Another car travelling too fast was involved in a minor crash when it came up on backed up traffic.
