More About Avalanches
According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, four things combine to make avalanches:
- A Steep Slope (30 - 45 degrees most likely to avalanche)
- Snow Cover (loose, dry snow avalanches easily)
- A Weak Layer in the Snow Cover
- A trigger (most deadly avalanches are triggered by people)
Avalanches are most common on north-facing slopes during the winter, and south-facing slopes in the spring. To avoid avalanches, experts recommend you:
- Find a Safe Route (Travelling on ridge tops may be safest. Windward slopes may be safer than leeward slopes. Go straight up and down-- don't traverse back and forth across possible slide area.)
- Be Aware of Conditions (Can change quickly. Call Avalanche Forecast Center ahead of time)
- Carry Emergency Gear
