Now, you're very last ski tip. This is our last ski show, but the season is far from over, you'll have a lot of great spring skiing through April...at least!

So here's another tip to help you work on your technique. This Week Susan shows you how to make a quick kick turn: [See Encoded Video]

viewSki Tips: "Bumps & the Fall Line!" (3/15/97)
KSL-TV Ski Utah Host Mark White specialized in moguls when he was on the US Ski Team, He was once considered one of the top mogul skiers in the world and now Mark is in the moguls again, with this weeks ski tip:

"Here are a couple pointers for skiing the bumps right down the fall line. When I was on the US Mogul Team, it always helped me to maintain speed by absorbing and getting on edge. Get on one edge first, then move to the other. Quickly. Keep facing downhill and keep your shoulders square to the hill. Keep your hands out in front . If you drop your hands you'll end up in the back seat and shoot out of the fall line.

Last but not least, look for the path of least resistence. I25 magine a basketball rolling down the hill, the path the ball takes is the same path you'll want to take.

Keep these tips in mind while you're skiing and you may find it easier to stay in that fall line, and while you're at it, have a blast in the bumps!"

viewSki Tips: "Edge to Edge!" (3/1/97)
Daily Oliver, Solitude Ski School:

(("This tip of the day is going to help us go from edge to edge. We are going to go from an uphill edge, to a flat ski, to the new uphill edge. The way we are going to do this excercise, is sit down in a chair and stay in the chair. We don't want to come up at all. We'll stay in the chair, come down, come down, and wow."))

(("We don't have to work, our skis are on the snow, and you go from edge, to a flat ski, to an edge, and that should help us have fun and keep a great big grin our faces all day long."))

viewSki Tips: "Attitude!" (2/22/97)
This week, we hear from Daily Oliver, who tells us his secret to attitude when you are learning to ski.

Daily Oliver, Solitude Ski School:

(("What I like to tell my students and anyone I'm working with is when you come up th canyon, leave the world of work bheind you. Enjoy the Scenery, enjoy the solitude, enjoy the quiet, get in a mode so you can relax. Put a g rin on your face, so that when you do get to the resort, you can get into what I cant Patience. Skiing is something you haven't done or you might have done but the cricial and most successful term we ahve is to be patient with ourselves and most important be patient with ourselves because we will get frusrated. Frustration brings on fatigue, it brings on tiredness adn it brings on soreness. If we can be paient we can bring all those things behind us and have fun."))

viewSki Tips: "Unweight!" (2/15/97)
Now, from the skiing the trees.. to your "Ski Tip." Here's the ever-entertaining Daily Oliver.

Daily Oliver, Solitude Ski School: (("Now this tip shows you how to use the mountain to unweight the ski. I'm on the top of the bump and I'll go very slowly so you can see this. I'm on the bump right now . You'll notice several things. My tips and tails are off of the snow. Here I can change my weight transfer and I turn around."))

(("Notice I'm on the top of the bump when I turn, come to the next bump, to of the bump, turn, top of the bump turn the feet. Its easy , its smooth, you can go as slow as you want to and stay under control without being a jack in the box, you'll have fun and you'll be smiling all day long and you will not get tire."))

viewSki Tips: "Stay Forward!" (2/8/97)
Now we have this week's ski tip. Here's one of Skiing magazine's favorite instructors in the U.S., Daily Oliver, Solitude Ski School:

(("The tip of the day is to help skiers, particularily myself, from going backwards at the beginning of the turn. What I want us to do is reach with the hands and form a V with your thumbs on your boot. That is where I want you to concenrate on feeling pressure . Your shin should be pressed against the tongue of the boot right there. That will put pressure on your inside downhill edge. We have to bend two joints to make that happen, the ankle and the knee. And if we can do that, it will improve our skiing so that we can stay forward all the time. It'll be so much fun it will make skiing easy and we won't have to work. You'll be smiling all day long."))

viewSki Tips: "Using Poles" (1/25/97)
We have a super deal on ski tips... Just turn your TV on for our ski show every week. You get to watch a pointer on technique.. and it doesn't cost a dime. And this week your tip comes Daily Oliver, an instructor at Solitude Ski Resort. Daily is famous !!!

Skiing magazine put him at the very top of a list of 100 of the country's greatest instructors! And Skiing calls Daily, the most patient instructor you can find anywhere! You'll see some of Daily's favorite tips over the next few weeks, and now here's Mr. Patient's very first appearance:

Daily Oliver, Solitude Ski School:

(("What we're going to do is figure out how to use our poles. Cock the wrist, touch. Cock the wrist , touch. Now I move into a parallel turn. I do the same, cock the wrist, touch turn. Touch, turn. But also notice my hands are about waist high, I keep my rhythm going, and that's all it takes. Just cokc the wrist. You're always looking down the hill. We'll just cock the wrist, we'll have lots of fun and you'll hve a smile on your face all day long, and we won't get tired at all."))

view Ski Tips: "Backcountry" (1/18/97)
More and more boarders and skiers are venturing out into Utah's back country. It's beautiful out there, but it can also be deadly. The avalanche danger can be high so you should always be prepared.

Here's a quick summary of the important things you need to know:

Rich Varga, Salty Peaks (("If you are going into the back coutnry this weekend, be sure to have all the necessary items. First make sure you call the avlanche forecast center first. Have a beacon or peeps and check it and make sure it works and it has good batteries. make sure you have a shovel. If you are going to be in the back country, you need to have a pack with extra food and water and a blanket and extra clothes. And don't go alone. Have someone with you because you always need a buddy. Have fun, and if you follow those tips you should be okay."))

view Ski Tips: "Balance & Stance" (1/11/97)
Jo Garuccio/Snowbird Ski School:

(("A balance, fore-aft stance is necessary to control your ski throughout the turn . One way to find that sweet spot is to take your ski off and hop up and down on your boot. Feel your foot on the snow and feel your shin against the front of the boot. Then go ahead and step into your ski and do the same thing on your ski. Now try to take those sensations to the turn, feeling the front of the boot against your shin. and your whole foot, your big toe and your arch , flat in the snow, have a great day."))

view Ski Tips: "Carving" (1/4/97)
Jo Garuccio / Snowbird Ski School:

(("A carving ski leaves a narrow track in the snow. A skidding ski leaves a wider track and moves more sideways through the turn.To increase your ability to carve, you have to learn to tip your feet and skis at the beginning of the turn as opposed to twisting them. One way to learn that is to put youself on flat terrain and learn to tip one ski at a time. Make sure you have a wide enough stance for balance and slowly roll one foot into the side of the snow. Flex forward, then try with the other foot. Roll your big toe , arch and ankle bone into the snow. Then try to maintain that tipping feeling on the outside ski throughout the turn. Happy Carving!"))

view Ski Tips: "Powder Skiing" (12/28/96)
Leif Grevle Solitude Ski School:

(("Today's tip is about powder skiing. When you have beautiful day like today you need to be a little more sensitive on the skis. Do not be too rough on the weight transfer and again the upper body must be quite. Please try to be more centered on the skis. You don't need to sit back, that will make you ski much better in the poweder"))

view Ski Tips: "Telemark Tip" (12/21/96)

view Ski Tips: "Aerial Jumping" (11/30/96)
Watch this video and you may become interested in aerial jumping.. here's some advice from a national champion:

(("The best advice is to be as strong as you can and stretch as often as you can. There are injuries and there are risks."))

(("They need to call the ski team in Park City and get involved in some of the programs available at thw winter sports park. During the summer they have camps for beginners. They start off on the trampline then they're into the pool. And they practice those jumps hundreds of times."))

(("And number one rule: have fun, of course."))

view Ski Tips: "Balance" (11/23/96)
So you don't race, you don't compete, you just ski for fun!!!! Well, here's a tip to help you have even more fun... by finding your best spot for balance.

Craig Panarisi, Solitude Ski School (("Hi. I'm Craig with the Solitude Ski tip. We're going to talk about balance today. I'm going to lean forward, then lean backward, and right there, that's good.")) (("Now that we have our balance and we're standing on the middle of our skis, we're going to stand on one ski. Here we go. excellent, right there.")) (("So, we know if we practice we can make nice turns. See you tomorrow on the hill."))

view Ski Tips: "Snowboard Tip" (11/16/96)
Bill Boardy, Park City Ski Area:

(("Alright guys, hi its Bill Boardy back with a snowboard tip- one of the things about the wasatch is you get this nice fluffy Utah powder. The best snow on Earth. one of the things to remember for you guys, snowboards are big wide and awfully fat so they float really well. Once again, just remember to stay nice and centered. A little weight on the back foot, and let the snowboard do all the work for you. Its got so much sidecut to it, it'll turn all by itself , all you need to do is pint it in the right direction and hang on, enjoy some of this great snow. Thanks guys, thats your tip of the day-enjoy!"))
