Natalie Williams
From the green grass on the schoolyards of Taylorsville, to golden dreams with the red, white and blue in Sydney, Natalie Willliams continues to expand her spectacular spectrum.
"It's going to be the ultimate. I'll probably start crying. I hope I can take
the video camera in. It'll be lots of fun ...enjoy the moment," she says.
"I think this will be special for Utah, to see a home-grown person going to the Olympics.. someone who they get to see everyday."
Growing up in Taylorsville was a whirlwind for the girl with too many choices and too much talent.
"I would go from basketball practice to volleyball practice to softball practice.
I also did track in high school, did the bodybuilding contest in high school," Natalie explains.
"I had a coach who said, 'In basketball you can be great,' but in volleyball I could be one of the best. Little did she know I could be the best in both, so it worked out pretty good."
Pretty good turned great when Natalie became a volleyball American at U.C.L.A. But her first taste of the Olympics was bitter. She was the last cut
player from the 1996 Olympic volleyball team.
Natalie recalls, "The hardest thing, more than leaving them, was seeing them walking in
at the opening ceremonies at the Olympics. That just killed me."
But Nat's a natural. And being the state of Utah's female athlete of the 20th century, you know the girl had options.
She made an easy transtion to WNBA stardom. She just won the league's rebounding title, and that was after a grueling world tour where Williams helped the U.S. National team go 29-2.
The gifts just keep coming. Now the girl from Taylorsville seems taylor-made for gold.
"It's going to be awesome, dream come true, switching sports from volleyball to basketball, getting a chance to play with and against the best in the world."
And if she wins a medal to match her golden hair?
"Hey, I'll wear it around. People want to try it on, whatever. As long as I know where it is. But it'd be nice.. I'd share it with the state because I owe a lot to
Utah and everyone who's helped me get where I am," she says.
