Logan Tom: Volleyball
One of our hometown athletes is fresh out of high school. But despite her age --- just barely 19 -- she has some impressive accomplishments in her sport of volleyball.
And she's hoping to help her team earn one more -- a medal at the Olympics.
It's been a whirlwind year for 19-year-old Logan Tom. She graduated from Salt Lake's Highland High School in 1999, got a volleyball scholarship to a top school, and is now at the Olympics.
Logan Tom/Olympic Volleyball: "SUMMERTIME YOU GET BORED. YOU FIND THINGS TO DO. SO I DECIDED TO TAKE UP A VOLLEYBALL CAMP AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THAT I'D BEEN GOING TO. AND ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER AND I GOT A SCHOLARSHIP AT STANFORD AND HERE I AM NOW."
As a student at Highland, she excelled in basketball, volleyball and academics.
Her high school volleyball team was All American and took state twice.
Logan Tom/Olympic Volleyball: "CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS, AND STATES LIKE THAT PRODUCE A LOT OF GOOD VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS. SO UTAH, UTAH IS ACTUALLY GOING UP THERE IN THE RANKS, WITH BYU, AND THERE'S A LOT OF YOUNG GIRLS COMING OUT OF UTAH. IT'S AWESOME."
In the last couple of years, Tom has been in major international competition in Russia, Japan and Brazil.
She says she owes a lot to volleyball and is grateful for her college scholarship.
Logan Tom/Olympic Volleyball: "JUST THE FACT THAT I WOULD NOT BE HERE UNLESS VOLLEYBALL HELPED ME ALONG THE WAY. JUST COMING - BECAUSE MY MOM RAISED ME AND MY BROTHER ALONE, BY HERSELF, FOR OUR ENTIRE LIVES. AND THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT THAT IT PROVIDED US."
The teams' strength is blocking, but its weakness is that there are no veterans.
This is a team rebuilt from scratch since the last Olympics, but gaining momentum.
Mick Haley/Women's Volleyball Coach: "QUITE HONESTLY, I'M GOING TO BE DISAPPOINTED IF WE DON'T WIN A MEDAL."
The last time the women's volleyball team medaled was a third place finish, eight years ago.
Logan Tom/Olympic Volleyball: "WE LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE TEAM AND EACH ONE OF THEM IS GOING TO BE HARD TO OVERCOME TO REACH OUR FINAL GOAL."
Mick Haley/Women's Volleyball Coach: "THAT'S THE REASON WE WORKED SO HARD. WE ARE GOING TO GO FOR IT."
