Turbo-charged
Only two players on the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team
don't hail from California, and Courtney Johnson is one of
them. Nicknamed “Turbs,” short for “Turbo,” Johnson is
known for her speed. At the 1999 FINA World Cup,
Johnson scored four goals in seven games from her driver
position. A three-time MVP at the University of
California-Berkeley from 1994-96, Johnson played her
senior year under the coaching of 2000 Olympic teammate
Maureen O’Toole.
Adding to the trophy case
In 1996, her exploits in the water earned Johnson MVP
honors at the NCAA tournament, as well as the title of
California Female Athlete of the Year. At Skyline High in
Utah, Johnson was a three-time All-American. She was
named to the all-state team three times and also played for
the soccer team. She is one semester away from
completing law school at Santa Clara (Calif.) University.
