Courtney Johnson in Sydney
The American Women's Water Polo team is doing great at the Olympics, and one of its best players is from Utah.
Shelley Osterloh caught up to Courtney Johnson in Sydney.
The American Women's Water Polo team has survived the quarter finals and is on track for Gold.
Only two players on the U.S. Women's Water Polo team don't come from California, and one of them is from Salt Lake City.
Nicknamed "Turbs," short for Turbo, Courtney Johnson is known for her speed. At Skyline High School in Salt Lake City she was a three time all American.
Courtney Johnson: "I STARTED JUST TO KEEP IN SHAPE FOR SWIMMING IN OFF SEASON."
At the Univeristy of California Berkley, she was a three time MVP and named California Athlete of the Year.
Now, Johnson is a star member of the Olympic Water Polo Team, with emphasis on the word "team."
She says they're close, in and out of the pool.
Courtney Johnson/USA Water Polo: "WE DECIDED TO PAINT OUR NAILS LAST NIGHT SO WE'D GET A LITTLE MORE SPIRIT GOING ON. WE JUST SPEND A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER DOING A LOT OF THINGS. THEY HAVE MASSAGES AT THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE, WHICH WE LIKE TO DO, AND THEY HAVE FACIALS SO THEY TREAT THE ATHLETES REALLY WELL."
Johnson has delayed her last semester of law school to compete in the Olympics.
Courtney Johnson: "IT'S GOING TO END UP TAKING ME FIVE YEARS TO GET MY LAW DEGREE, WHICH IS USUALLY A THREE YEAR PROGRAM. BUT YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SACRIFICE TO GET GOALS IN MORE AREAS THAN ONE."
And the goal she has now is to win a medal at the Olympics - a goal very much within her grasp.
Courtney Johnson: "I THINK THE MAIN REASON THE GOLD MEDAL IS SO IMPORTANT IS NOT NECESSARILY WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE, BUT IT SYMBOLIZES HOW MUCH WORK YOU'VE HAD TO PUT INTO IT TO GET THE GOLD MEDAL. SO HAVING THE GOLD MEDAL JUST SHOWS IN A PHYSICAL WAY THAT YOUV'E ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH."
