Latvia Takes Gold on Gymnastics Floor
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Now Alexei Nemov has a medal of every color.
The men's all-around champion won the silver medal in the floor exercise Sunday. He also has a bronze from the team competition.
Igors Vihrovs of Latvia won the gold. Jordan Jovtchev of Bulgaria took the bronze.
When Vihrovs finished his routine, he ran off the podium pumping his fists as the crowd cheered. He then stood next to Nemov, pacing nervously as he waited for his score.
When his 9.812 was posted, putting Vihrovs in first place, he jumped up and down, throwing his arms in the air in triumph. Nemov applauded and gave Vihrovs a congratulatory hug.
The United States' medals drought in gymnastics continued. Morgan Hamm, who was celebrating his 18th birthday Sunday with twin brother, Paul, finished eighth out of the nine competitors.
Morgan looked solid throughout his routine. While almost everyone else had little hops on their landings, he was solid. He performed his flares with ease, scissor-kicking his legs around as he turned his body on his hands.
But with about three seconds to go, Morgan faltered. After whipping himself across the floor on aerial back handsprings, he took a big bounce forward on his landing and had to put his hands down to keep himself from falling.
He scored a 9.262.
Marian Dragulescu, who won the floor exercise at the world championships, couldn't hold the landing on his final tumbling pass. He took a big step back with his left foot to steady himself, but the error was costly.
He scored a 9.712, not good enough for a medal, good enough only for sixth place.
