Fine Forecast For Opening Ceremonies
The date for the Olympic opening ceremonies was fixed seven years ago.
So Sydney has long been concerned with what the weather will be like for the big moment Friday.
After all, in the southern hemisphere, this is early spring.
And in the chilly spring mornings, the palm trees seem out of place.
But for their games, Sydney organizers have as their official weather consultant, the Austrailian Bureau of Meteorology.
Kevin O'Laughlin works there. "The Sydney forecast for Friday is for fine, cool to mild conditions, with light to moderate southwest winds," he explains.
And that makes IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch happy. "With the promise of good weather, the opening ceremony should be a great celebration of the Olympic spirit," he predicts.
