Police See No Security Threat in Sydney
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Police handling Olympic security said they can see no major problem in that area at the Sydney Games.
"There is no security threat at all to the Games that we're aware of," New South Wales police commissioner Peter Ryan said Thursday after meeting with the IOC executive board in Sydney.
Ryan, in charge of Olympic security, said the only concern was anti-globalization protesters moving to Sydney after next week's World Economic Forum in Melbourne.
Ryan said Australians were becoming more aware of security since a homemade bomb was found on a train on the Olympic rail network last week.
"People are beginning to report things around them," Ryan said. "I think the message is getting through."
IOC executive Jacques Rogge listed weather, transportation and security as the only areas where Olympic organizers could not give 100 percent guarantees of success.
"We're very pleased by the tight level of security," he said. "It's a top priority for Sydney and for the IOC and I think we're in good hands."
