Romney Responds To Alcohol Issue
Liquor sales, during the 2002 Winter Olympics has been a simmering controversy ever since Salt Lake City won the right to host those games.
Yesterday, Mayor Rocky Anderson called on state lawmakers to loosen liquor laws during the Olympics.
Bruce Lindsay has reaction from SLOC President Mitt Romney, from Sydney.
SLOC President Mitt Romney only reaffirmed his long-standing position, despite a very vocal Rocky Anderson.
Anderson told us yesterday, he thinks not changing Utah's liquor laws is a mistake.
But Romney says SLOC is sticking to its policy and will not ask for any changes in the state's liquor laws.
Last night Romney told KSL Radio that organizers will not sell alcohol at the Medals Plaza, which is planned for the block just east of the Triad Center.
Mitt Romney/SLOC President: "I don't want to have, for instance, at our Medals Plaza where we're going to have people coming for free to attend the medals events every evening in downtown Salt Lake City...I don't want to have alcohol served there, or advertising for alcohol products around the Medals Plaza."
Rocky Anderson/Salt Lake City Mayor: "I don't think it's very hospitable the way we approach alcohol laws. I think certainly it'll be an uphill battle, if not impossible to get them changed."
Eyewitness News has been conducting a poll on the question of alcohol sales and consumption during the Olympics.
