Transit Tax Poll

Oct. 1-- A new poll shows Salt Lake residents aren't ready to pay more money for more commuter transit.

According to a survey by Dan Jones and Associates and reported by the Deseret News in a copyrighted story, among 371 Utah voters, the measure has almost as many supporters as opponents.

Raise Sales Tax For Transportation Improvements?
Definitely For34%
Probably For19%
Probably Against12%
Definitely Against30%
However, residents in Weber and Davis counties would accept a proposed transit tax, while Salt Lake County residents would not.

In Davis County, 74% of those polled like the idea. Twenty percent do not.

In Weber County, the referendum wins in the poll by a 61% to 33% margin.

But in Salt Lake County, 47% of those surveyed favor the measure, while 50% oppose it.

The proposed increase would raise the sales tax by a quarter cent in the counties that approve it.

If all three counties approve the tax hike, it should raise another $43 million a year for U.T.A.

U.T.A. says the money would be used to build commuter rail and increase frequency and location of bus service.
