Initiative B

Oct. 11-- Current law allows the government to seize your property if it was used in a crime. Initiative B on the ballot would change that.

The initiative aims at changing how the government seizes property.

It would also stop agencies from taking property from a person who innocently loans their car to someone who then commits a crime.

The Drug Enforcement Agency speaks out against the initiative. Agent in charge Don Mendrala says only in rare cases does that happen. He says if the measure passes, moneys will be drained and the quality of law enforcement could decrease.

But supporters of the measure say it protects innocent owners, by making it illegal for agencies to take property unless the government proves that the owner actually committed or consented to the crime.
