Final Poll: Federal, State, County Races
Utah voters are firming up how they'll cast their ballot this Tuesday.

 
Nov. 5, 2000-- Our latest KSL/Deseret News poll shows interest in this election is high. But some races are still too close to call.

It doesn't surprise many people that Utah overwhelmingly supports George W. Bush for president. But state races aren't necessarily so predictable, according to this latest KSL-Deseret News poll.

One high profile race has a Democrat leading in Utah's second congressional district.

Second District Congress
Matheson 48%
Smith 37%
Other 7%
Don't Know/Refuse 11%
Margin of Error +/-5%
Jim Matheson leads Republican Derek Smith by eleven percentage points according to the 399 people surveyed.

Other Congressional and Senate races favor Republican incumbants, according to this Dan Jones poll.

First District Congress
Hansen 63%
Collinwood 22%
Others 3%
Don't Know/Refuse 11%
Margin of Error +/- 5%
In the first District, the 380 respondents favor long time congressman Jim Hansen by a wide margin over Democratic challenger Kathleen McConkie Collinwood.

Third District Congress
Cannon 49%
Dunn 31%
Others 4%
Don't Know/Refuse 17%
Margin of Error +/-5%
In the Third district, Chris Cannon leads Democrat Donald Dunn by 18 percentage points, according to the 390 people polled there. 17 % per cent are still undecided in that race.

Utah Senate
Hatch 63%
Howell 27%
Others 2%
Don't Know/Refuse 7%
Margin of Error +/- 3%
For Utah Senate, Orrin Hatch leads Democrat Scott Howell 63-to-27 per cent. 1,216 likely voters were surveyed for this statewide race.

Utah Governor
Leavitt 54%
Orton 38%
Friedbaum 2%
Don't Know/Refuse 6%
Margin of Error +/- 3 %
Those statewide voters also indicate strong support for Governor Mike Leavitt's third term in office. Leavitt leads Democrat Bill Orton by 16 percentage points.

Attorney General
Shurtleff 43%
Richards 34%
McCullough 3%
Don't Know/Refuse 20%
+/- 3%
In another statewide race; for Attorney General, Republican Mark Shurtleff leads Democrat Reed Richards. But a relatively large number of people--20 percent--indicate they haven't made a final decision yet.

Salt Lake County Mayor
Workman 42%
Crompton 41%
Don't Know/Refuse/Other 17%
Margin of Error +/- 4.5 %
Another important race is too close to call: For Salt Lake County mayor. According to 478 likely Salt Lake County voters, Republican Nancy Workman leads Democrat Karen Crompton by just one percentage point. 17 percent indicate they haven't made up their minds yet in that race.

The poll also surveyed 478 likely Salt Lake County voters for their opinion on 'at large' county commission seats.

Horiuchi 40%
Snelgrove 39%
Other/Don't Know/Refuse 22%
Margin of Error +/- 4.5%
The race is close between Randy Horiuchi and Richard Snelgrove in the 'at large A' seat, with 22 percent undecided.

S.L. County Commission At Large B
Harmsen 37%
Larsen 30%
Other/Don't Know/Refuse 33%
Margin of Error +/- 4.5%
33 percent are undecided in the 'At Large-B' seat, with Republican Steve Harmsen leading Democrat Carl Larsen.

S.L. County Commission At Large C

Bradley 45%
Kennard 33%
Other/Don't Know/Refuse 22%
Margin of Error +/- 4.5%
Democrat Jim Bradley leads Republican James Kennard in the 'At Large-C' race.
