New Poll: Local Races
November 7 you will be asked to cast your vote in a bundle of key races. And our exclusive poll shows that people are starting to make up their minds about the candidates.

Oct. 15, 2000

Governor Mike Leavitt and challenger Bill Orton have been campaigning nearly full time since Labor Day. Here are the latest numbers from a KSL-Deseret News Dan Jones Poll of 914 registered voters:

Governor
Mike Leavitt 52%
Bill Orton 37%
Other/Refuse 3%
Don't Know 8%
+/- 3.3%
More than half favor Republican Leavitt, while 37 percent pick Orton.

Other high profile races are a little closer. For instance, the 'up-for-grabs' 2nd Congressional District race.

Congress (2nd District)
Matheson 45%
Smith 35%
Other 6%
Don't Know 15%
+/- 5.5%
Our poll of 308 second district voters shows Democrat Jim Matheson leading Republican Derek smith by 10 percentage points. But a whopping 15 percent say they're still undecided; and another six percent are devoted to other candiddates, indicating the race is still up for grabs.

Attorney General
Shurtleff 35%
Richards 33%
McCullough 3%
Don't Know/Refuse 29%
+/- 3.3%
Margins are also tight in the race for Utah Attorney General. Republican Mark Shurtleff leads Democrat Reed Richards by two slim percentage points, with 28 percent undecided.

Congress (3rd District)
Cannon 50%
Dunn 21%
Others 4%
Don't Know/Refuse 25%
+/- 5.5%
The poll of 304 third Congressional district voters indicates an interesting race is shaping up there. Incumbant Chris Cannon leads Democratic challenger Donald Dunn by a wide margin. But 25 percent are still undecided right now.

There are other races that are, at this point, long shots, according to the poll.

U.S. Senate
Hatch 64%
Howell 24%
Others 2%
Don't Know/Refuse 10%
+/- 3.3%
Incumbant Senator Orrin Hatch has a wide lead over Democratic challenger Scott Howell, even with 10 percent undecided, according to the state wide poll.

Congress (1st District)
Hansen 59%
McConkie Collinwood 24%
Others 3%
Don't Know/Refuse 15%
+/- 5.5%
In the first Congressional district, Incumbant Jim Hansen leads Kathleen McConkie Collinwood.

Salt Lake Co. Mayor
Workman 37%
Crompton 36%
Don't Know/Refuse 27%
+/- 5%

In Salt Lake County, there is a neck-in-neck battle for county mayor. The race could still go either way for Republican Nancy Workman and Democrat Karen Crompton, because a lot of people are still undecided, according to the 398 people surveyed.

All this week, more poll results will be broadcast by KSL, and printed in the Deseret News. Among those: a local poll on the presidential race, and opinions of Utah's various ballot intitiatives.
