Oct. 24, 2000--
George W. Bush is charging today that his rival is planning to expand government.
The Texas governor also said at a campaign stop in Illinois that Vice President Gore's tax cut program is too complex.
Bush today is also putting President Clinton on notice -- if he stumps for Al Gore, he's subject to attack.
Bush issued the warning at a campaign stop in Illinois after he was asked by a middle school student about Clinton's behavior in the White House.
Meantime, Al Gore says he -- and not George W. Bush -- is the one favoring smaller government.
Gore used a speech in Little Rock, Arkansas, today to hit back at Bush's charges that his spending plans would cause bureaucratic bloat.
Gore says that's a "cartoon image" of past Democratic candidates. He says the truth is he'll shrink government to its smallest size in 50 years -- with a new round of reform he's calling "Reinventing Government Two."
However, Gore says the bureaucracy in Texas has been growing under Bush. And he says Bush's spending plans for Washington can't be paid for -- because of his whopping tax cuts.
Gore began his campaign day sipping coffee on the front porch of a Little Rock home. He heard Millie and Bobbie Goza complain of how hard it is to persuade local voters to spend enough on schools.
