Oct. 30, 2000--
Monday, Initiative A became a topic for both state religious leaders and a candidate for President.
Political specialist Richard Piatt explains how the fight is shaping up.
Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan is a staunch 'English Only' supporter.
He talked about it at a brief appearance in Salt Lake City today, just a few hours after the state's religious leaders spoke out against it.
Pat Buchanan spent about an hour at Salt Lake City's airport, hoping to rally ultra-conservative voters.
Pro-life, anti-homosexual, pro-prayer in schools,
His platform is illustrated in television ads. Including one portraying a man choking on a meatball, unable to get help.
Television Advertisement: "EVER MISS ENGLISH? IMMIGRATION IS OUT OF CONTROL. BUSH AND GORE ARE WRITING OFF ENGLISH FOR GOOD."
Pat Buchanan/Reform Party Candidate For President: "THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS ONE OF THOSE THAT HOLDS THIS DIVERSE NATION AND PEOPLE TOGETHER. YOU SEE NOW LINGUISTIC GHETTOS WHERE ENGLISH ISN'T EVEN SPOKEN ANY MORE."
"English Only" is up for a vote in Utah next week.
It would require English for all state business, printed and spoken.
The issue is divisive enough to gather a group of religious leaders together today. They are speaking out against Intitiave A, saying it's racist.
They say many immigrants learn English anyway, and that enacting such a law sends a negative message.
Rev. David Henry/Presbytery of Utah: "THE ENGLISH ONLY MOVEMENT HAS AN IMPLICIT RACISM THAT MUST BE EXPOSED AND FOUGHT. IT SENDS A MESSAGE, INTENDED OR UNINTENDED, THAT PLACES IMMIGRANTS IN A SECOND CLASS CATEGORY."
The English Only Initiative comes at a time when immigrants are moving to Utah at an unprecidented rate.
Many are already learning English in classes.
That fact alone may insure the English Only issue will not disappear on election day.
For the record, the LDS Church stated today that it is staying neutral on Initiative A.
