Mark Shurtleff and Reed Richards, the men who would be Utah's top law enforcer, differed sharply over the prospect of enforcing any law that would prohibit guns in public schools.
Reed Richards/(D) Candidate, Attorney General: "I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO HAVE SCHOOLS WITH GUNS. I DON'T THINK WE NEED GUNS IN SCHOOLS OR CHURCHES. WE DON'T HAVE GUNS IN AIRPORTS OR COURTROOMS OR POLICE STATIONS. I DON'T THINK WE NEED THEM IN SCHOOLS OR CHURCHES."
Mark Shurtleff/(R) Candidate, Attorney General: "THAT WOULD DO NOTHING TO MAKE OUR KIDS SAFER. BUT LET'S FOCUSE ON TAKING GUNS AWAY FROM CRIMINALS. ALL THE STATISTICS IN AMERICA SHOW BY DOING THAT WE CAN BE MORE SAFE, BUT NOT BY TAKING THEM FROM LAW ABIDING CITIZENS."
The candidates also discussed Utah's crime rate, pornography, and methamphetamine problem, among other things. Click here for a detailed account of what they said about those topics.
