Election Featured Items:

Utahns turned out in better than expected numbers Tuesday to vote on federal, statewide and countywide races, plus some local propositions and bonds. On the hottly debated issue of wildlife, Utahns said yes to Proposition Five 56% to 44%. All the other statewide propositions passed as well.

The Second Congressional District delivered one of the tightest races of the night. Incumbent Congressman Merrill Cook took the win over challenger Lily Eskelsen 53% to 43%. In Salt Lake County, voters reelected Commissioner Mary Callaghan, and approved a new form of government, but voted down a measure to bond for burying power lines. The bond to rebuild the Library block passed as well. Weber County voters turned down a new form of government. (apologies for previous misprint)
