When Does the New Millennium Start?

There has been a lot of debate and argument on the official beginnings of the "New Millennium" -- Does it begin January 1, 2000 or does it begin January 1, 2001? In fact, the media as a whole has been accused "bad journalism" by insinuating that the new millennium begins on January 1, 2000.

While many calendar experts agree that the millennium officially starts on January 1, 2001, the "world" will be celebrating in a few days when the clock strikes January 1, 2000. In addition, the "millennium bug" or Y2K problem relates specifically to January 1, 2000.

Could it be a matter of semantics? Or, is everyone celebrating on the wrong day? And, if they are, do they care? You be the judge!! Here are a few links to help in answering the question:
