Jazz Survive in Playoffs as they Win Game 5, 88-71
SALT LAKE CITY (May 25, 1999) -- Karl Malone set the tone early with another vicious elbow on
Brian Grant and the Utah Jazz avoided elimination and finally displayed the type of poise that
has led them to back-to-back Western Conference titles.
The Jazz pulled within 3-2 in their conference semifinal series with a convincing 88-71
victory over the Portland Trail Blazers but more importantly watched their less-experienced
opponents wilt under pressure with a chance to close them out.
Malone, who sparked the Jazz to a 93-83 victory in Game One with a left elbow to Grant's
jaw, scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and found the bridge of Grant's nose with an
elbow in the first quarter. Utah jumped out to a 14-4 lead and never trailed in front of a
raucous crowd at the Delta Center.
Game Six is Thursday at Portland, where the Jazz have dropped nine of their last 11,
including Games Two and Three of this series.
Grant, who outplayed Malone in each of the previous three games, was held to eight points
in 39 minutes as Portland lost its cool in the fourth quarter.
Mike Dunleavy, the NBA Coach of the Year, went after the officials after a questionable
technical foul was called on Grant. Dunleavy had to be restrained and eventually was
ejected. Grant and Malone had to separated during the fracas.
Bryon Russell scored 22 points and John Stockton handed out 14 assists for Utah, which
shot a blistering 63 percent in the first half for a 49-42 lead at the break.
Damon Stoudamire drained a jumper to start the second half before Malone sparked the
rout with six straight points, including consecutive dunks. Jeff Hornacek, who collected 14
points, added a layup before Russell sank a 21-footer to make it 59-44 with 9:10 left.
Isaiah Rider scored 16 points and Rasheed Wallace had 15 for Portland, which was held to
its lowest point total of the season.
