Budget Cuts

Some state agencies are scrambling to figure out how a series of budget cuts are going to affect them. In particular, the Department of Corrections and Department of Public Safety are wrestling with possible layoffs, and the early release of inmates.

The Legislature is letting each agency decide how and what to cut. But the job isn't easy, and means no one knows for sure yet what may happen because of these cuts.

In the Department of Corrections, the grim number is $2.2 million -- money that won't be there next week. That could mean possible layoffs, possible early inmate releases -- the outcome is yet to be decided.

State Troopers could be cut back in the Department of Public Safety: $1.4 million less money there for the rest of the year. But tough decisions are still being made.

The grim bottom line extends to the court system, to the National Guard, and to higher education, too.

At his monthly appearance on public television, the governor today said he plans to intervene on behalf of public safety.

In all, the cuts the Legislature made yesterday could translate into the loss of between 100 and 200 jobs statewide.

At the same time, public education's budget was restored through the use of one time money and shifting from other budgets.

The bottom line is: the effects of the tough budget are serious. And it's not over yet.
