Coping With Cancer Online   Back to Front
As Seen On Eyewitness News

April 6, 00 -- The internet has revolutionized the way we do everything from shop to communicate. And now it's helping patients cope with cancer.

The James Cancer Hospital in Ohio has set up one of the first online support programs in the country designed and run by cancer experts.

Program operators say it's a great outlet for people who have questions about the disease but may not have the strength or the confidence to leave the house to find answers.

Patients can also enter chat rooms to talk with other people fighting cancer.

Susan Smiley/Breast Cancer Survivor: "I get to talk to other people that had been through the same thing I had been through, other patients, and they often times have a lot of good ideas from personal experience."

Patients say another benefit is that they can keep their identity a secret, which allows them to ask questions without feeling embarrased or self-conscious.
