Fifty Years! Main Street to Social Hall Avenue to Broadcast House. Live television to film to videotape. Fifteen minutes of news per day to more than five hours of news per day. Black-and-white to color. Bulky tube cameras to portable digital technology. Microwave. Satellites. Fiberoptics.
These are a few of the visible changes at KSL Television over the past 50 years. More important changes are behind the scenes -- literally hundreds of talented, capable, dedicated individuals who have made it possible for KSL-TV to keep ahead of changing technologies, serve our advertising clients, to report and produce our award-winning news product, and to take care of the myriad details required to keep a television station on the air. You won't read about most of those individuals in the following pages - only about the remarkable results of their effort.
Neither will you read about the incredible support KSL-TV receives from our ownership and from the outstanding individuals who guided us from Bonneville International Corporation, our parent company - President Gordon B. Hinckley, Elder David B. Haight, Arch L. Madsen, Rodney H. Brady, Bruce T. Reese, and others. That unwavering support is not evident in the pictures on the TV screen, but it is always evident -- and much appreciated -- by those of us who know what it has meant to this television station over the years.
Our appreciation also extends to those millions of viewers who have tuned to KSL-TV over the past half-century. Their loyalty and support have made KSL one of the most successful and respected television stations in America. For much of that time, including today, KSL Television has been the audience leader in our vast coverage area -- one of the largest geographic coverage areas in the nation. We are confident the audience loyalty reflects our commitment to high quality in news, technology, and service to the community.
Now, we begin the next half-century...and beyond. It, too, will bring incredible technological advances, beginning with digital television which we introduced last year. Once again, KSL is a pioneer, nationwide, as we took the lead in building with other Utah stations a joint transmitter atop Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains west of Salt Lake City. We are already broadcasting in digital television, and are giving Utah consumers access to this revolutionary new sight and sound experience long before other parts of the nation are enjoying its benefits.
Digital television provides us options never before available, options which will allow KSL-TV to better serve Utah consumers. Those options will include a vast array of compelling local content, data and high speed Internet service, as well as news and information on demand.
We know that technology will continue to change, but the one constant which has made our station a true leader throughout the years is our commitment to service. Whether it's broadcasting the Day's of '47 Parade, our annual telethon to help raise money for Primary Children's Medical Center, or important informational public service campaigns like KSL's Family Now, we are determined to help make the communities we serve better places to live for us all.
I am honored to be part of KSL Television. I look forward to continuing KSL's traditions of progress and community service as we make the transition from the remarkable Twentieth Century in to what promises to be an incredible Twenty-first Century for KSL Television, and for the audience we serve.
