Brigham Young Falls to Washington Huskies 20-10 in Seattle
SEATTLE, WA -- Cornerback Toure Butler scored on a 35-yardfumble return and a 98-yard kickoff return as ninth-rankedWashington primed itself for next week's showdown with Nebraskawith a 20-10 victory over Brigham Young. Butler, a sophomore who saw spot duty last year and recorded hisfirst pass defended last week at Arizona State, returned hisfirst career fumble recovery for a score to give the Huskies(2-0) a 14-0 lead with 4:07 to go in the first half. After BYU (1-2) scored on Owen Pochman's 23-yard field goal 2:07into the second half, Butler recorded the third-longest kickoffreturn in school history and the first for a touchdown sinceJa'Warren Hooker raced 89 yards against Arizona last October18th. "I followed Joey (Jarzynka) through the hole and the next thingI knew, it was open field," said Butler. "So I kept running and had some blockers and got into the end zone. I'm on the field to make plays. I try my best to do that." Washington has won the last four meetings in this series after a31-3 loss in 1985, the first game between the traditionalpowers. Brock Huard completed 16-of-33 passes for 178 yards and atouchdown for the Huskies, who travel to Lincoln next week.Washington is the last team to win at Nebraska, recording a36-21 triumph on September 21st, 1991. The Huskies lost at hometo Nebraska last season, 27-14. "We need to get ready for Nebraska and get the momentum rolling in practice," said Huard. "We need to get the confidence up and get Dane (Looker) back, and Pat Reddick back, get Ja'Warren healthier. We're going to be ready to go next week." Kevin Feterik, who accounted for BYU's lone touchdown with aone-yard run, completed 16-of-33 passes for 169 yards and aninterception. Ronney Jenkins, who rushed for 171 yards lastweek against Arizona State, was held to 36 on 12 attempts. "It was just bad," said Feterik. "We couldn't get the running game going. It was tough. They broguht it to us. They were stunting up front and shifting as we hiked the ball, so it was confusing to our lineman." Huard staked the Huskies to a 6-0 lead in the opening minute ofthe second quarter, hitting freshman H-back Chris Juergens witha 52-yard TD pass. It capped a four-play, 66-yard drive. "They blitzed and we knew they would, leaving Chris man-on-man in the flat," said Huard about the scoring pass. "He ran a great route, a wheel route up the sideline, made a great catch and I couldn't have been more excited for him to open up his career with the Huskies on a play like that." "He threw a perfect pass," said Juergens. "I didn't have to do much except run and catch. I was just glad I caught it." Butler was the recipient of a fortunate bounce as Feterik andJenkins failed to connect on a handoff. Butler raced down theleft sideline and crossed the goal line as he was tackled. Huardthrew the two-point conversion pass to Hooker to make it 14-0. BYU took the second-half kickoff 62 yards in eight plays beforesettling for Pochman's 23-yard field goal. But Butler found aseam by the right hashmark on the ensuing kickoff andaccelerated through to midfield. After crossing the 50, hestopped short and escaped two would-be tacklers before racingdown the right sideline. Feterik's one-yard touchdown with 4:24 to play capped an11-play, 58-yard drive. Washington played without flanker Dane Looker, who caught 11passes for 108 yards in the season-opening victory over ArizonaState. Backup quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo ran for 48 yardsand completed a pass for 17 more. The Huskies held BYU to 204total yards.

Washington's first possession gets to midfield after a
roughing-the-passer penalty, but the Huskies are forced to punt from
there. BYU then punts after failing to get a first down. Washington
answers with another punt of their own.
After another BYU punt, Washington's Brock Huard is picked-off
after a deflection by the Cougars' Jason Walker. BYU can't
capitalize, however, as Owen Pochman's 51-yard field goal is wide
left.
Washington comes back with the first score of the game as Huard
hits Chris Juergens for the 52-yard touchdown pass. KEY PLAY:
Pass interference penalty against BYU on 3rd down.
2nd Quarter:
BYU begins the quarter with another punt. Washington tries to add
to their lead, thanks to a 46-yard run by backup quarterback
Marques Tuiasosopo. But a field goal attempt by Jim Skurski
misses and the Huskies six-point lead remains.
BYU's next possession once again ends in a punt, but Jason
Walker's second interception of the game gives the ball back to the
the Cougars. Two plays later, Ronney Jenkins fumbles in the
backfield. Washington's Toure Butler recovers and finds the endzone
for the 35-yard touchdown. The Huskies make good the two-point
conversion (Huard to Hooker) to take the 14-0 lead.
BYU punts again after another three-plays-and-out series.
Washington returns the favor with a punt of their own. Time runs out,
however, on the Cougars attempt to get on the scoreboard.
3rd Quarter:
The Cougars start out the second half with their best drive of the
game. On third-and-goal from the six, Kevin Feterik finds Tevita
Ofahenguage in the endzone, but he drops the ball. BYU is forced to
settle for a 23-yard Pochman field goal. KEY PLAYS: Jenkins
19-yard run; 34-yard pass from Feterik to Aaron Roderik.
Washington answers immediately as Toure Butler take the kickoff
and goes 98-yards for the touchdown to put the Huskies up 20-3.
The extra point attempt was blocked by BYU. Both teams then
exchange punts.
BYU takes over following the Huskie punt at their own 42. From
there, they march down field for their first touchdown of the game.
The drive was capped by a one-yard QB sneak by Feterik. The drive
featured three straight third-down conversions. KEY PLAYS: Feterik
to Ben Horton for 20-yards; Ofahenguage from Feterik for 16-yards.
The Huskies punt on their next possession. BYU then punts,
followed by another Washington punt. On the last play of the period,
Kevin Feterik throws an interception to Hakim Akbar.
4th Quarter:
The Cougars get lucky as Washington can't capitalize on the
Feterik pick. The Huskies are stopped at the BYU 38 and punt from
there. BYU also punts once again, however.
The Huskies take over in good position, and a quick pass set them
up first-and-goal from the two. BYU stops them on four straight
attempts from there, and the Cougars take over on downs from the
one-yard line. BYU is lucky to avoid a safety, and the Cougars punt
once again.
BYU gets the ball back briefly after they hold the Huskies once
again on downs, but the Cougars go three-plays-and-out again and
give the ball back to Washington. The Huskies are able to run the
clock out from there.
