BYU Beats San Jose State in a Shootout, 46-43

PROVO, Utah -- Ronney Jenkins rushed for 250 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns as Brigham Young defeated San Jose State, 46-43, in a Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division shootout.

Jenkins scored on a 14-yard run with 9:23 remaining in the second quarter to give the Cougars (5-3, 3-1 WAC Pacific) a 12-7 lead. He added an 11-yard touchdown catch from Feterik with 35 seconds remaining in the half to give BYU a 25-14 lead.

Jenkins, who carried the ball 31 times and added three catches for 25 yards, scored on a pair of one-yard plunges in the third quarter to extend the advantage to 39-22 with 3:54 left in the third quarter.

His nine-yard TD jaunt with just over five minutes left to play capped the scoring for BYU and tied the school mark set by Eric Lane, who scored five TDs against Utah State on October 13th, 1979.

Chris Kasteler had a stellar day for San Jose State (3-5, 2-2), completing 22-of-32 passes for 319 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. His five-yard scoring strike to Carlos Meeks with 7:07 remaining pulled the Spartans within three points, but the Cougars held on for their fourth straight victory in the series.

Feterik was 13-of-20 for 245 yards with an interception. Owen Pochman kicked field goals of 31 and 44 yards for BYU and has misfired just twice in 12 attempts this season. The Cougars held a 577-370 edge in total yardage.

1st Quarter:
SJSU receives the kickoff and is forced to punt to begin the game. The Cougars receive the ball at the 20 and RB Kalani Sitake runs for a 27 yard gain and RB Ronney Jenkins gains 12 yards. Another Jenkins run puts BYU on the 14 and Pochman nails a 31 yard field goal.

The Spartans go 3 and out again. RB Junior Mahe, Jenkins, and Feterik run the ball to put the Cougars on the 15. BYU is then hit by penalties and are forced back to the 26. Pochman kicks a 43 yard FG.

SJSU again is forced to punt, but BYU is hit with a penalty on the kick, so SJSU gets a first down at the 32, but they cannot advance and punt again. The Cougars end the quarter at the 34 after runs by Jenkins and Mahe.

2nd Quarter:
Jenkins opens the quarter with a 25 yard rush to put BYU on the 37. A 26 yard reception by RB Aaron Cupp is taken away because he steps out of bounds. BYU punts to give the Spartans the ball on the 3. QB Chris Kasteler completes a 49 yard pass to WR Oliver Newell. RB Deonce Whitaker runs for 9 yards and Kasteler completes a 17 yard pass to HB Donte Scarbrough. BYU is hit with another penalty that puts the Spartans on the 16. Whitaker runs it in for the touchdown.

BYU receives the kickoff at the 35 and Jenkins makes a huge 46 yard run to the 19. He runs again from the 14 to score. The Cougars cannot convert the 2 pt. conversion.

Whitaker receives the ball for the Spartans at the 2 qnd runs 60 yards to put then on the 38 yard line. Kalaster hits Newell from the 32 yard line who runs it in to score and give SJSU the lead again.

BYU is stuck until Feterik hits WR Margin Hooks with a 26 yard pass to put the Cougars at 1st and 2. Mahe the scores from 2nd and goal. BYU fails to convert the 2 pt. conversion for the second time.

The Spartans are forced to punt but put the Cougars back to the 9. Feterik connects with WR Ben Horton for a 65 yard gain. Feterik then finds Jenkins for a 10 yard touchdown. BYU kicks this time and Pochman gets the extra point.

BYU kicks off but it falls short and the Spartans start at 44 yard line. TB Carlos Meeks gains 6 yards on a run and Kasteler passes for 10 yards. He then finds WR Shawn Green on a 25 yard pass to score. Kasteler runs in for the 2 pt. conversion.

3rd Quarter:
The Cougars keep the ball on the ground to begin the second half. Mahe and Jenkins trade off and RB Aaron Cupp picks up 12 yards. Jenkins then movies the ball from the 10 to the 1 yard line, and scores on the subsequent play.

SJSU cannot gain any running yards and has to punt. WR Aaron Roderick gains 11 yards on a Feterik pass and Jenkins runs 31 yards to put BYU on the 3rd yard line. Jenkins then scores from the 1 yard line.

4th Quarter:
Kasteler completes a 17 yard pass, but the Spartans cannot gain a first down. The Cougars get the ball back but Feterik's pass is picked off by DT Al Faamausili on the BYU 16. The Spartans are then hit twice as Whitaker and Kasteler are pushed back to the BYU 31. Kasteler then finds TE Sean Brewer for a 8 yard TD pass.

WR Mike Rigell runs it back for the Cougars but loses the ball when he is hit. The Spartans get the ball on the BYU 15. Kasteler connects with Meeks for a 12 yard pass. Meeks then scores from the 3 yard line.

BYU puts together a drive from the 35. Feterik connects with Cupp for a 7 yard pass, and Jenkins runs for 8 and 14 yards. Mahe adds 13 rushing yards. Jenkins scores his 5th TD of the game from the 9 yard line.

Kasteler hits WR Shawn Green on a 36 yard pass and WR Waking Bailey for 25 yards. On 3rd down, the Cougars are called for a personal foul, which puts the Spartans on the 5. Meeks scores on a pass from Kasteler.

Mahe runs the ball back but fumbles and SJSU gets the ball on the BYU 19. Whitaker appears to score but holding is called. DB Brian Gray picks off Kesteler's pass to give the Cougars possesion again. They cannot advance, however, and must punt. SJSU pushes the ball up to the BYU 21, but two penalties cost them 10 yards. David Silberstien misses a 47 yard FG attempt. BYU runs out the clock to end the game.
