BYU Crushes New Mexico, 46-21

PROVO, Utah -- Kevin Feterik threw for 422 yards and four touchdowns as surging Brigham Young completed an undefeated home season with a 46-21 rout of New Mexico on Saturday.

Brigham Young (7-3, 5-1 Western Athletic Conference) won its fifth straight game and remained atop the WAC's Pacific Division, while hapless New Mexico (3-7, 1-6 WAC) has lost six of seven.

Feterik, who was 25-of-42, was the clear victor in his duel with Lobos quarterback Graham Leigh, the WAC's total offense leader. Leigh was frustrated by BYU's smothering seventh-ranked defense, which scored on an interception return and recorded a safety.

Feterik's TD passes went to four receivers as BYU racked up 522 yards of offense, or nearly seven yards per snap. The Cougars scored the first 23 points of the second half to put the game away after leading just 17-14 at halftime.

Leigh was battered throughout the afternoon and managed just 182 yards, 81 below his average. He was 13-for-37 for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Linebacker Rob Morris, Brigham Young's leading tackler, made his first career interception in the fourth quarter and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown. He then drew an illegal celebration penalty for diving into the end zone and making snow angels on the grass.

In the fourth quarter, BYU's Owen Pochman kicked his 62nd straight extra point to break his brother Ethan's school record, but Pochman then missed his next attempt to end the streak.

The first half featured two lengthy runs after short pass receptions. Ronney Jenkins turned a screen pass into a 52-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Dion Marion took Leigh's shovel pass 57 yards for a score 2:02 before halftime.

Mike Rigell and Ben Horton caught touchdown passes from Feterik in the third quarter, and on the first play of the fourth, Jenkins caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage, reversed his field and ran 52 yards for a score that put Brigham Young up 40-14.

Jenkins finished with 71 rushing yards and five receptions for 101 yards.

(Source: Blue & White Sports Network)
1st Quarter:
The Lobos kick off to the Cougars to start the game. BYU QB Kevin Feterkik cannot complete two pases and BYU punts. UNM QB Graham Leigh's pass is nearly picked off by DB Derick Bates, but it is ruled as an incomplete pass. The Lobos cannot get their first down and punt as well. Feterik completes his first pass to RB Aaron Cupp for a 21 yard gain. The Cougars advance the ball to the 22 behind runs by RB Ronney Jenkins and receptions by WR Aaron Roderick WR Ben Horton. Owen Pochman bounces in a 40 yard FG off the upright to put the Cougars on the scoreboard.

UNM is stopped at the 13 yard line on their kickoff reception and cannot gain any ground. Jenkins returns their punt to put BYU on the 41. The Cougars promptly lose the ball when Feterik is hit and fumbles. UNM cannot do anything as Leigh nearly throws an interception on a blitz. The Lobos punt again. The Cougars come back as Jenkins makes great runs of 16 and 22 yards, but they are hit with a penalty and cannot advance. They punt to UNM. The Lobos still can't make anything happen and punt yet again. Roderick returns the punt to put the Cougars on the 48, and Jenkins makes a huge 52 yard run to score a TD. Pochman hits the extra point. UNM QB Leigh runs the ball to the BYU 21 to end the quarter.

2nd Quarter:
UNM TB Gordon Lennox makes runs of 3 and 2 yards to put the Lobos on the 8 yard line. WR Germany Thompson takes a pass from Leigh to score the Lobos' first points. Jason Bloom hits the extra point.

The Cougars don't get too far and are forced to punt. The Lobos can't accomplish much more and do likewise. BYU builds a steady drive behind a 12 yard reception by Jenkins and 10 and 24 yard runs by RB Junior Mahe that puts them on the 8 yard line. They lose 1 yard, and then Feterik hits RB Kalani Sitake for a 9 yard TD. Pochman nails the extra point.

As the Lobos start their drive, BYU DB Brian Gray picks up a fumble and runs it to the end zone, but it is ruled an incomplete pass. The Lobos punt again. The Cougars make it only to the 50 yard line and must give the ball up again. UNM drives to their 43 yard line with a 16 yard completion to TB Marion Dion. Dion then takes a pitch from Leigh and carries the ball all the way to the end zone for a 57 yard TD. Mike Ross picks up the extra point.

The Cougars race the clock to make their drive. WR Margin Hooks and Roderick receive passes but Roderick fumbles a reception on the UNM 37, and the Lobos get the ball to end the first half.

3rd Quarter:
UNM begins the half with the ball but don't keep it long as Leigh's pass on the 45 yard line is picked off by DB Jason Walker. The Cougars get a 25 yard run from Mahe and Feterik completes a 11 yard pass to TE Carlos Nuno. At the 7 yard line on 3rd down, inches from the 1st down, they elect to go for it. But Mahe is immediately stopped by the Lobos' line.

UNM starts out at their own 13 but a penalty pushes them back to the 2. Dion is brought down in the end zone on the next play by DL Byron Frisch and The Cougars score the safety. BYU keeps the ball and comes back quickly. Feterik completes a 52 yard pass to WR Mike Rigell, who runs it in for a TD. Pochman again hits the extra point.

The Lobos can't get past midfield on their drive and must punt. Roderick returns it to the 50 yard line for BYU. They cannot advance any further, however, and punt to to the Lobos, who get the ball on their 20. The Cougar defense pushes UNM back to inside their 10 and they must punt yet again. The Cougars then make it to midfield on Roderick's return. Feterik then connects with WR Ben Horton for a TD. Pochman's extra point attempt is successful.

BYU gets the ball back after another UNM punt.

4th Quarter:
The Cougars start the last quarter with a bang as Jenkins makes a huge 52 yard run to score the TD. Pochman again hits the extra point. The Lobos push back on a run by Lennox and a reception by WR Che Johnson. But Cougar DB Rob Warcup knocks away Leigh's pass on 3rd down, and the Lobos have to punt. Drew Miller now enters the game for BYU, replacing Feterik. The Cougars get nowhere, however, and must punt.

QB Eric Jaworksy enters the game for the Lobos. He runs for 14 yards to advance the Lobos to midfield, but his next pass is picked off by LB Rob Morris who runs it 51 yards to the end zone to score.

The Lobos come back as Jaworksy completes passes to WR Derrick Milner. On the 10 yard line, Jaworksy connects with TB Gordon Lennox and he scores a TD. BYU comes out with RB Will Snowden who runs for 13 and 5 yards. But Miller is sacked and the Cougars are pushed back to inside their 20. They punt. UNM plays out the end of the game.
