Cougars Defeat Rainbows in Hawaii, 31-9

HONOLULU, HI -- Kevin Feterik threw a pair touchdown passes and Mike Rigell brought back a kickoff 96 yards for a score as Brigham Young rolled to a 31-9 victory over winelss Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference matchup.

Feterik hit Rigell with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the first half to give BYU (4-3, 2-1 WAC Pacific) a 17-3 and found Margin Hooks from 15 yards out in the third quarter for his other score.

Rigell gave the Cougars a 24-3 lead just 15 seconds into the third quarter with his electrifying kickoff return. Feterik made it 31-3 just under two minutes later when he found Hooks in the end zone.

Feterik was an efficient 20-of-26 for 212 yards as the Cougars won for the first time in four road tries this season.

Hawaii (0-6, 0-4) got its lone touchdown of the night with 4:47 to play on Derek Robinson's 23-yard scoring strike to Derek Zoller. Robinson completed 10-of-24 passes for 183 yards. In dropping all four of its games at home, Hawaii has been limited to a total of 15 points.

BYU - Hawaii Game Summary
(Source: Blue & White Sports Network)
1st Quarter:
Hawaii gets the ball to begin the game, and punts on their first possession. BYU punts on their first drive also, but pins the Rainbows on their own one-yard line. The Rainbows go three-and-out from there and punt once again. A bad punt sets the Cougars up at the Rainbows 20-yard line. On third down, Kalani Sitake fumbles for BYU, and Cougars turn it over to Hawaii.

From there, the Rainbows put together an impressive, time-draining drive that takes up the remainder of the quarter. The Rainbows end the first quarter on a one-yard run by running back Charles Tharp. They have the ball second-and-goal from the nine-yard line.

2nd Quarter:
After eating up the clock for most of the 1st quarter, the Rainbows get the board first early in the second period. Chad Shrout connects on a 36-yard field goal to give Hawaii the 3-0 lead. KEY PLAYS: Dan Robinson to Eleu Kane for 19-yards; Robinson to Wesley Morris for 17-yards, pass interference against BYU.

The Cougars answer with a long drive of their own, and get on the scoreboard thanks to a 35-yard Owen Pochman field goal. KEY PLAYS: Kevin Feterik to Aaron Cupp for 16-yards; Feterik to Cupp again, this one for 13-yards; Feterik to Margin Hooks for 20-yards.

The Rainbows punt near midfield on their next possession. BYU drives from there, capping a good drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Ronney Jenkins. KEY PLAYS: Feterik to Ben Horton for 20-yards; Feterik to Mike Rigell for 20-yards.

Hawaii can't answer, and the Rainbows are forced to punt. BYU comes back quickly, and finishes off a quick drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Feterik to Rigell. KEY PLAYS: Feterik to Hooks for 12-yards; Rigell from Feterik for 24-yards. Hawaii gets the ball back, but with only nine seconds left in the quarter, time runs out after a long pass.

3rd Quarter:
Hawaii kickoffs to the Cougars to begin the 3rd Quarter, and BYU wastes no time adding to their lead. Mike Rigell takes the kickoff and streaks 96-yards to the endzone for the touchdown. Hawaii's first drive of the second half ends in another punt.

That punt leads to yet another Cougar score, this one a 15-yard pass from Feterik to Hooks. KEY PLAYS: Junior Mahe with a 20-yard run. The Rainbows respond with a Chad Shrout punt. BYU can't do anything either and punts the ball back.

New Hawaii quarterback Bronson Liana leads the Rainbows on a good-looking drive. The Rainbows get down to the BYU four-yard line, but the drive stalls there and Hawaii turns the ball over on downs near the 20-yard line. BYU stalls out on offense, however, and punts the ball back to the Rainbows.

4th Quarter:
Hawaii has the ball to begin the quarter. The Rainbows drive into BYU territory, but fumble the ball away there. Hans Olsen recovers for the Cougars, who take over on their own 45. A three-and-out series by BYU forces another J.D. Hartsfield punt to the Rainbows. Hawaii returns the favor again as both teams begin substituting freely.

Garbage time has begun as the Cougars punt once again with 8:14 left in the final period. Hawaii comes back with starting quarterback Dan Robinson, but the Rainbows still punt. BYU subs take over on their own 17-yard line, but backup running back Tyrone Brown fumbles and Rainbows recover on the BYU 21. Two plays later, Robinson finds Derek Zoller from 23-yards out for the first Hawaii touchdown of the game. The Cougars, behind backup quarterback Brandon Doman, run the clock out from there to leave the islands with the victory.
