Brigham Young Beats Arizona State, 26-6 in the First Home Game of the Season
PROVO, UTAH -- Kevin Feterik and Ben Horton hooked up on a 74-yard touchdown pass and Owen Pochman kicked four field goals as Brigham Young handed 15th-ranked Arizona State its second straight loss, 26-6.
Ronney Jenkins carried 30 times for a career-high 171 yards and one touchdown for BYU (1-1), which rebounded from last week's loss at Alabama, where the Cougars surrendered five touchdowns to tailback Shaun Alexander.
Arizona State (0-2), which entered the season with national championship aspirations, has lost its first two games for the first time since 1979. Last week, the Sun Devils were shocked at home by Washington, 42-38.
Arizona State has suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since the middle of the 1995 season. The Sun Devils had not been held under 10 points since being blanked by Southern California, 31-0, three years ago.
The Sun Devils managed just 22 total rushing yards on 23 carries.
After taking four straight from the Cougars, Arizona State has lost the last two meetings. The Sun Devils still hold a 20-7 edge in the all-time series.
Pochman's 35-yard field goal 4:41 into the game put the Cougars on top. Early in the second, Feterik threw a dump off to Horton, who broke several tackles before going 74 yards for the score.
Feterik completed just 6-of-20 passes for 166 yards and Jenkins made three catches for 43 yards.
Pochman connected from 41 and 39 yards in a 3:16 span late in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 16-0 halftime lead.
Jenkins' two-yard run late in the third and a 38-yard field goal by Pochman early in the fourth made it 26-0. Arizona State salvaged some pride just over four minutes into the fourth when Ryan Kealy found a leaping Lenzie Jackson in the back-left corner of the end zone for a 15-yard score.
Arizona State running back J.R. Redmond, who carried 22 times for 108 yards against Washington, was held to just 28 yards on 16 carries. Kealy completed 16-of-34 for 241 yards and Jackson hauled in six catches for 66 yards.

BYU - Arizona State Game Summary (Source: Blue & White Sports Network)
1st Quarter:
After an ASU punt on their first series, the Cougars march down
field quickly and go up 3-0 on an Owen Pochman 34-yard field goal.
KEY PLAYS: Kevin Feterik to Tevita Ofahenguage for 24 yards;
Kalani Sitake from Feterik for 26 yards.
The remainder of the quarter featured five punts between the teams.
The story of the game so far- the outstanding play of the BYU
defense. ASU had a total of two first downs in the quarter. ASU
Heisman-hopeful J.R. Redmond had seven yards on six carries in
the period.
2nd Quarter:
Following a BYU punt, ASU finds themselves deep in Cougar
territory after QB Ryan Kealy spots Tariq McDonald for a 32-yard
gain. The drive stops at the BYU 25, however, as the Cougars shut
down J.R. Remond once again. Mike Gauthier's 44-yard field goal is
wide left and BYU keeps the 3-0 lead.
Two plays later, Feterik's short pass to Ben Horton is tipped by
ASU's J'Juan Cherry. Somehow, Horton finds the tipped ball and
brings it down the field for a 74-yard touchdown. The pass is
Feterik's longest completion of his career.
Again, ASU is able to put a drive together, this one gets to the BYU
12. But once again, Gauthier misses a field goal, this one a
30-yarder. BYU responds with another drive deep into Sun Devil
territory, but the Cougars are lucky to keep the ball as Feterik is hit
and fumbles. The drive results in an Owen Pochman 41-yard field
goal. KEY PLAYS: Ronney Jenkins 33-yard run;
roughing-the-passer penalty.
Both teams exchange punts, but BYU gets the ball back after a J.R.
Redmond fumble at the ASU 20. A Sun Devil personal foul gets the
Cougars even closer, down to the ASU 10. BYU can't get into the
endzone from there, and settles for another Pochman field goal, this
one from 33-yards out.
3rd Quarter:
After multiple punts by both teams, BYU puts Ronney Jenkins to
work, running eight of nine to plays to him. The drive was capped by
a Jenkins touchdown run from 2-yards out. KEY PLAYS: Jenkins
15-yard run; Feterik to Jenkins for 17 yards.
ASU tries to answer once again, as Kealy completes a long pass to
Kenny Mitchell over the middle. Mitchell is stripped, however, and
BYU recovers to get the ball back. The Cougars drive stalls out in
ASU territory to end the 3rd Quarter.
4th Quarter:
BYU punts to begin the 4th period, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty
against the Sun Devils gives BYU the ball back. Once again, it's
Pochman for the Cougars with a 38-yard field goal to extend BYU's
lead to 26-0.
The Sun Devils finally get on the board as Ryan Kealy finds Lenzie
Jackson in the corner of the endzone from 15-yards out. The PAT
attempt was blocked, though, by Brad Martin. KEY PLAY: Kealy to
Brian Forth for 42-yards.
On BYU's next possession, freshman Junior Mahe breaks free for a
57-yard gain off-tackle. Unfortunately, the Cougars can't continue
the drive, and are forced to punt. Two plays later, ASU's Kealy
throws an interception to BYU's Jason Walker for the turnover. The
Cougars burn some clock from there before turning the ball over on
downs. ASU returns the favor by giving the ball back after fourth
down fails on the BYU 14-yard line.
