SAN DIEGO -- Kevin Feterik passed for 262 yards and two
touchdowns as No. 13 Brigham Young scored 30 unanswered points
in a 30-7 Mountain West Conference pasting of San Diego State.
The Cougars (8-1, 5-0 Mountain West) remained at the front of
the race for the new conference's first title with their sixth
straight win. They visit Wyoming next weekend before closing
the regular campaign against Utah on November 20.
"Utah and Wyoming, we're going down the stretch against our
toughest opponents," said BYU linebacker Rob Morris, who set up
defensive lineman Hans Olsen's touchdown by forcing a fumble.
"We definitely have not passed the toughest part of our
schedule." Morris added. "We have to play like this if we want
to win in Laramie (Wyoming)."
BYU has won 18 of its last 24 games against the Aztecs (3-6,
1-4).
Feterik was intercepted by cornerback Bishop Miller, whose
eight-yard return gave San Diego State the ball at the BYU 47.
Quarterback Jack Hawley ran in from nine yards to complete a
six-play drive and give San Diego State a 7-0 lead with 3:22
left in the opening quarter.
It was the first time the Cougars trailed in 18 quarters and the
last time the Aztecs' offense struck.
Feterik drove the Cougars 61 yards to the tying score in just
three plays, hitting freshman running back Luke Staley with a
14-yard scoring toss with 8:08 left in the second quarter.
Staley has scored in eight straight games.
Feterik completed 21-of-32 passes and was intercepted once. He
hit Margin Hooks five times for 66 yards and took the pressure
off the running game, which totaled just 33 yards.
The Cougars were limited to a season-low 295 yards. Their
previous low was 390 against New Mexico on October 16.
Larry Ned fumbled away the ball to Morris on his 8 but BYU
gained only three yards before Owen Pochman kicked a 23-yard
field goal for a 10-7 lead with 4:58 left in the second quarter.
Nate Tandberg missed a 50-yard field goal on the next possession
and the Cougars drove 57 yards in nine plays over the final 1:48
of the half, taking a 13-7 lead into the locker room on
Pochman's 27-yarder.
"It wasn't as tough as I thought it would be," BYU coach LaVell
Edwards said. "The big difference was the turnovers on both
sides in the first half. And I thought in the second half we
caught a couple of breaks with their turnovers, so ultimately
that was the difference in the ballgame."
Hawley was stripped by Morris and Olsen picked up the fumble and
rumbled 24 yards for a touchdown to push BYU's lead to 20-7 just
1:49 into the second half.
Three punts later, Feterik drove the Cougars to the San Diego
State 24 and Pochman hit from 42 yards to make it 23-7 with 2:43
left in the third quarter. Pochman has made 13 straight field
goals.
An interference penalty on 3rd-and-4 keyed Brigham Young's final
scoring drive, a nine-play, 83-yard march that ended with
Feterik's 15-yard TD strike to Hooks with 7:06 remaining in the
game.
"These are two very good defensive football teams and we made
some plays offensively," Edwards said. "I thought that made a
big difference tonight. Kevin is as good as anybody we've had
come and play for us and right now he's playing very well. He
makes a big differnce in there."
Hawley was 9-of-20 for 98 yards and one interception and Lon
Sheriff was 9-of-16 for 94 yards in his first action since the
season opener. The pair was sacked seven times and helped the
Aztecs to just 241 yards of offense.
Jonas Lewis carried 14 times for 75 yards and tight end Gray
McNeill had a career game with five catches for 59, but their
efforts were offset by five turnovers.
"We're proud of the effort, but we don't like the results," said
San Diego State coach Ted Tollner, who is 0-4 against Edwards in
his tenure with the Aztecs. "We played with great effort, no
matter what happened adversity-wise. They're a great football
team and they find a way to win.
"If we're gonna beat a team like BYU, we need to play with that
type of effort and intensity, but error-free."
