Crowton era begins with bang

PROVO, UTAH -- New coach, same offense.
Brandon Donnan threw for three touchdowns and Luke Staley ran for three scores in the first half as Brigham Young won its first game under coach Gary Crowton with a 70-35 victory over Tulane in the Black Coaches Association Classic.
It was the beginning of a new era at Brigham Young, where Crowton took over for the legendary Lavell Edwards, who retired after last season. With quarterbacks such as Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Ty Detmer, Edwards brought a high-powered offense to BYU that became the school's trademark.
Crowton, who spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, unveiled a potent offense of his own on Saturday.
The Cougars matched their highest point total since a 70-31 win over Utah in 1989 and were just 13 points short of the school record set in 1980.
"It was an exciting day for and an exciting win for myself and the players," Crowton said. "I wasn't surprised by the offensive power because I knew the plays and I knew what they were going to do."
BYU rolled up 734 total yards and Tulane collected 508.
"I didn't realize we were all invited to a track meet today, but obviously we were exposed in some areas," Tulane coach Chris Scelfo said.
Staley had TD runs of two, 29 and 65 yards in the first quarter and finished with 142 yards on 10 carries.
Donnan completed 25-of-31 passes for 286 yards and three scores and also ran 11 times for 115 yards and a TD.
With the score tied 21-21 after one quarter, the Cougars broke open the game. Donnan threw an eight-yard TD pass to tight end Spencer Nead, a 12-yarder to Gabriel Reid and a 27-yarder to Nead.
After Tulane countered with a 10-yard TD pass from Patrick Ramsey to Mewdele More, Brian McDonald scored on a 26-yard TD run to make it 49-28 at halftime.
McDonald added TD runs of one and five yards in the second half and was the third BYU back with over 100 yards, gaining 110 on 18 carries.
Ramsey completed 20-of-43 passes for 263 yards. Terrell Harris caught nine passes for 133 yards.
