CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia -- Owen Pochman booted a 26-yard field goal in the first overtime to lift Brigham Young to a dramatic 38-35 come-from-behind victory over Virginia.

The Cougars (1-1), who trailed 21-0 at halftime, rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final 8:11 to avoid an 0-2 start. They scored five touchdowns in the second half after being held to three points by Florida State last Saturday.

The teams combined for 1,027 yards but the game lasted only three hours, 23 minutes.

Antwoine Womack rushed for 160 yards, including scampering 67 yards for a touchdown to give the Cavaliers (0-1) a 35-21 lead with 12:13 to play. But sophomore Bret Engemann, who was harrassed by Florida State, led the Cougars back.

Engemann hit tight end Doug Jolley for a six-yard score with 8:11 to play and led an eight-play, 49-yard drive in the final moments of regulation that culminated in a six-yard tying-touchdown pass to Margin Hooks with 50 seconds lef

Starting just his second collegiate game, Engemann completed 34-of-41 for 447 yards with two interceptions. Brian McDonald carried 20 times for 66 yards for the Cougars, who beat Virginia for the first time in three meetings.

The game was eerily reminiscent of last season's contest between the teams in Provo, Utah. In that game, Virginia received 210 yards by current Arizona Cardinal running back Thomas Jones to post a 45-40 triumph.

Arlen Harris, Womack and Tyree Foreman rushed for touchdowns of 28, four and five yards, respectively, in the first half as the Cavaliers appeared to take control. But McDonald scored on runs of six and one yards in the third quarter for BYU.
