Cougars Beat UNLV in Defensive Battle

PROVO, UTAH -- Luke Staley rushed for a career-high 167 yards as Brigham Young posted a 10-7 Mountain West Conference victory over Nevada-Las Vegas.
Staley carried 28 times and saw his most extensive playing time in four games this season after being limited by injuries. It was the first career 100-yard performance for the sophomore.
Brigham Young (2-3, 1-1 Mountain West) avoided its third straight loss and limited the Runnin' Rebels (1-2, 0-1) to 243 total yards.
Brian McDonald gave the Cougars the early lead with a 25-yard touchdown run with 10:15 left in the first quarter. Owen Pochman booted a 42-yard field goal later in the period for a 10-0 advantage.
Bret Engemann and Charlie Peterson split time at quarterback for BYU. Engemann completed 7-of-18 passes for 62 yards and one interception while Peterson went 8-of-11 for 95 yards.
UNLV was held off the board until quarterback Jason Thomas scored on a one-yard run with 12:26 remaining in the fourth qaurter. Thomas completed 11-of-17 passes for 202 yards with an interception and rushed for 51 yards on 15 attempts.
