First half is the Cougars' demise as they fall to Syracuse

Troy Nunes hit Pat Woodcock on touchdown passes of 79 and 65 yards and James Mungro ran for two more scores as Syracuse beat Brigham Young 42-14 on Saturday night.

It was the first game BYU (2-4) ever played in New York state and the Cougars probably aren't anxious to return anytime soon. Syracuse (2-2) jumped to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and easily snapped its two-game losing streak.

The Orangemen, burned for three long touchdown passes in a 34-17 loss at East Carolina a week earlier, repeatedly victimized the Cougars on long plays. Mungro scored on runs of 61 and 20 yards, and Maurice Jackson scored on an 18-yard reverse after BYU tailback Brian McDonald fumbled near his own goal line and Keeon Walker recovered for Syracuse.

The Orangemen led 42-7 at halftime. They gained 390 yards on just 36 plays, scored seven touchdowns in 14:41, and did not punt. The opening drive took 10 plays, the next two each took one play, and the last four took 21.

Meanwhile, the Syracuse defense held the Cougars to minus-8 yards rushing on 11 carries in the first half and 21 yards on 21 carries for the game. Luke Staley, who gained a career-high 167 yards last week against UNLV, was held to 1 yard on 6 carries.

Nunes was 10-for-11 for 228 yards, a career high, and was not intercepted. Mungro rushed for 119 yards on 11 carries.

The Cougars went three-and-out the first three times they had the ball and fumbled on the first play of their fourth possession. By the time Charlie Peterson got BYU's first completion late in the first quarter - a 13-yard screen pass to Will Snowden for the Cougars' initial first down - Syracuse led 21-0.

Peterson completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Pittman with 9:01 remaining in the first half to keep the Cougars' shutout record intact. They have not been held scoreless for an NCAA-record 318 games.

Peterson was efficient, completing 18-of-29 passes for 206 yards with no interceptions. He combined again with Pittman for a 27-yard TD pass in the closing minutes of the third quarter before being replaced by Brandon Doman in the fourth.

BYU's starting quarterback Bret Engemann, who missed on all six passes he attempted, suffered a partially separated shoulder in the first quarter and was replaced by Peterson. Engemann will undergo surgery next week. It is unknown whether he will return this season.

Syracuse used a little trickery to get its offense untracked. Facing a fourth-and-4 from the BYU 37 on their first possession, the Orangemen faked a 54-yard field goal attempt by Mike Shafer and Nunes, the holder, completed a 17-yard pass to Jeremie Frazier for a first down.

Nunes, booed by the frustrated Syracuse fans after getting stopped for no gain on the game's second play from scrimmage, hit Malik Campbell for 12 yards over the middle on a third-and-10 play to the BYU 7. Nunes scored on a 1-yard run three plays later to put the Orangemen in front for good.
