BYU 49, TULSA 39
After scoring just 51 points in its last three
games, the offense rose from the dead, scoring 49 point in Saturday's
win over Tulsa. BYU finished the game with 543 yards and
converted on 7 of 15 third-down opportunities.
Saturday's win over Tulsa saw the return of
injured starter Kevin Feterik to the field after suffering a hairline
fracture in his left ankle. Feterik was able to return after only missing
three games, though doctors and the coaching staff were not
expecting a full recovery for another full week. While his ankle healed
he was able to watch the Cougar offense sputter from the birds-eye
view of the press box, and when he returned he was ready. One of
his primary targets has definitely seen a difference in his play since he
came back this past Tuesday in practice. "When he came back, he
was a different quarterback than before," senior wideout Ben Cahoon
said. "He took command of the offense, and that's what we have
needed." Against Tulsa, Feterik was 15-of-28 for 246 yards and had
four touchdowns.
Last week vs. UTEP the Cougar ground game
came to a grinding halt, netting zero yards. What a difference a week
makes, as BYU rushed 46 times for 296 yards and three touchdowns
vs. Tulsa. Brian McKenzie led the Cougars once again, carrying the
ball 23 times for 187 yards and two touchdowns (31 yards, 44
yards). "After that game at UTEP," McKenzie said, "we wanted to
come out and prove what we could do."
In the victory over Tulsa, true freshman Jaron Dabney
saw the most action he has all season, playing both on special teams
and on the offense. Dabney carried the ball seven times for 58 yards,
caught one pass for 18 yards and a touchdown and returned three
kicks for 44 yards. It was the kind of game he has been expecting to
have all season. "Coach (Norm) Chow (offensive coordinator) has
been telling me all season that I would get in, but last week in practice
he told me, 'I'm being serious, you are going to get some reps this
week.' "
The McKenzie/Dabney one-two punch was
reminiscent of last season's backfield tandem of McKenzie and
Ronney Jenkins (out this season for breaking school honor code
violations). With the straight-ahead power and speed of McKenzie,
and the quick feet and slippery running style of Dabney, the Cougars
were able to keep the defense off balance, much like McKenzie and
Jenkins were able to do last season when they rushed for a combined
1,745 yards on 295 carries (5.9 yards per carry). "I was thinking
about that midway through the third quarter," Dabney said. "I was
thinking, 'Hey, this is pretty exciting,' and I was talking to Ronney on
the sideline, and he was like, 'You're doing it man.' I don't see any
difference between last year and the performance today."
With the prodigious amount of
offense that was seen in the BYU vs. Tulsa game, and the apparent
lack of defense, it was like all in attendance had gone to see a football
game and a wacky WAC game broke out. Coach LaVell Edwards
was thinking the same thing as he opened up his postgame remarks.
"I told Norm (Chow) that this was the first WAC game I had seen all
year," Edwards said.

1st Quarter
With Kevin Feterik back from injury the Cougars wasted no time in getting the offense
back on track. BYU mounted a three play, 83-yard touchdown scoring drive following a Tulsa
punt. Brian McKenzie scored from 31-yards out to give BYU the early lead. KEY PLAYS:
Feterik to Margin Hooks for 41-yards.
BYU plan to get Jaron Dabney more involved in the offense paid big dividends in the 1st
Quarter as the speedster found the endzone from 18-yards out to extend the Cougars lead.
KEY PLAYS: Poor Tulsa punt, 15-yard pass from Feterik to Dustin Johnson.
The offensive fireworks continue for the Cougars as Feterik finds Aaron Cupp for the
21-yard score to put BYU up 21-0. KEY PLAYS: Feterik to Hooks for 17-yards.
2nd Quarter
Early in the second period, Tulsa finally gets a break. The Golden Hurricane stop the
Cougars on offense and force BYU punt J.D. Hartsfield to kick out of his own endzone. He
never gets a chance, however, as Tulsa blocks the punt out of the endzone for the safety.
The Golden Hurricane get the ball back following the safety and cut into the lead some
more with a touchdown. New quarterback John Fitzgerald leads Tulsa into the endzone,
finding Mark Lippe for the 2-yard score. KEY PLAYS: Fitzgerald to Charlie Higgins for
17-yards.
After forcing BYU into another punt, Tulsa gets a 45-yard field goal from Jason
Anderson to again trim the lead. KEY PLAYS: 4th down conversion by Higgins to preserve the
drive.
With under two minutes remaining, BYU mounts an impressive touchdown drive. Feterik
finds Ben Cahoon, who makes another circus catch in the endzone for the score. KEY PLAYS:
Feterik to Cupp for 18-yards.
Tulsa answers right back, however, with only 19 seconds on the clock. A short kickoff
sets the Golden Hurricane up with good field position, and it takes only one play for the
touchdown. Fitzgerald connects with Jeremiah Brister for the 59-yard TD.
3rd Quarter
Ben Cook's second interception of the game puts BYU in great position at the Tulsa 36.
Four plays later, Feterik finds Cahoon in the back of the endzone for six points. KEY
PLAYS: Dabney on the reverse for 14-yards.
The Golden Hurricane answer once again, this time its' Charlie Higgins from 2-yards out
to bring the Cougar lead back to nine. KEY PLAYS: Kevin Isham 26-yard run, Fitzgerald to
Lippe for 16-yards.
Feterik continues to look good following a month-off with an injury, this time hitting
Will Snowden for the 18-yard touchdown. KEY PLAYS: McKenzie runs of 17 and 9-yards. Dabney
11-yard pass catch.
Both defenses appear to be on vacation, as Tulsa drives right down for the score.
Higgins scores again, this time from 1-yard out. KEY PLAYS: Big kick return, 20-yard pass
to Damon Savage, Isham 18-yard run.
4th Quarter
After both teams are actually forced to punt, BYU puts up some more points thanks to
Brian McKenzie. McKenzie takes the ball from 44-yards out for the score. KEY PLAYS:
McKenzie 18-yard run, Snowden 10-yard run, Dabney 9-yard run.
The Golden Hurricane come back again. Damon Savage catches a Fitzgerald pass and breaks
into the opening field for a 65-yard touchdown. KEY PLAYS: Savage 17-yard pass from
Fitzgerald.
