BYU 31, TCU 10
The Cougars' 31-10 victory
over TCU on Saturday brings the streak of wins in Cougar Stadium
over teams from Texas to 20.
The win over the Horned Frogs saw
the return of an offense to Cougar Stadium. After several weeks plus
a first half of lackluster performances, an improved Cougar offense
took charge in the second half to the tune of 266 yards and four
touchdowns. "It felt great," senior wideout Ben Cahoon said. "It is a
relief and it gives us a bit of confidence to build on for the remainder
of the season."
The win over TCU comes during a key stretch for
BYU, during which the Cougars play three WAC doormats - TCU,
UTEP and Tulsa in preparation for season-ending games at New
Mexico and then back home vs. in-state rival Utah and a possible
WAC championship game (providing the Cougars stay undefeated
and Rice falters).
A key component in the Cougars'
second-half barrage vs. TCU was freshman quarterback Drew
Miller. Miller started the season as a redshirting third string behind
Kevin Feterik (out with an ankle fracture) and Paul Shoemaker, but
was pressed into starting the second half in relief of an injured
Shoemaker. The young gun led BYU on touchdown drives of 61
yards (six plays), 63 yards (nine plays), 64 yards (nine plays) and 83
yards (11 plays). Miller finished the game 16-of-26 for 180 yards,
three touchdowns and no interceptions. "It was fun," Miller said.
"That is the only way to describe it."
After the TCU game, coach LaVell Edwards
stuck to his guns on the quarterback situation, despite a winning
performance by freshman Drew Miller. "Shoemaker twisted an ankle
and has a Grade 1 tear in his knee, so he is a little stiff. We held him
out (in the second half) and wanted to get him ready for next week,"
he said. "There is no change in the quarterback situation from what I
have said before. We need both of them to win.
Freshman punt and kick-returner Jaron
Dabney wowed the crowd at Cougar Stadium by fielding kicks on a
dead run and refusing to call a fair catch once in eight returns under
some duress. After the game, coach Edwards was asked how much
"creative license" Dabney has when he fields kicks. "Not nearly as
much as he takes. But like I said before, he is exciting." One of
Dabney's exciting runbacks was a 46-yard kickoff return that set up
the Cougars' second quarter field goal.

1st Quarter
After the teams exchange punts, TCU drives down to the BYU 31. The Horned Frogs fumble
a handoff, though, and turn the ball over to the Cougars. BYU can't capitalize, however,
and is forced to punt again.
That BYU punt leads to another long Horned Frog drive. TCU takes the ball down the BYU
3, where Michael Reeder connects from 20-yards out to give TCU the 3-0 lead. KEY PLAYS:
Basil Mitchell 20-yard run. Derek Canine to LaDainian Tomlinson for 23-yards.
2nd Quarter
BYU begins the 2nd Quarter with a drive to the TCU 16. But a quarterback sack stops the
drive there, and forces the Cougars to settle for a 42-yard field goal from Owen Pochman.
KEY PLAYS: 46-yard kickoff return by Jaron Dabney, Paul Shoemaker to Aaron Cupp for
18-yards.
TCU answers quickly with a drive to the BYU 1. The Horned Frogs fumble again, however,
and blow another opportunity. The Cougars take over on their own 1 with Drew Miller at
quarterback. The Cougars can't get anything going once again, though, and punt the ball
away.
3rd Quarter
The Cougars start the 2nd half with an impressive touchdown drive. Brian McKenzie
sneaked into the endzone from 2-yards out to give BYU the 10-3 lead. KEY PLAYS: Miller to
Ben Cahoon for 18-yards, Dustin Johnson 36-yard run.
After a TCU punt, freshman quarterback Drew Miller connected on his first touchdown
pass as a Cougar. After BYU drove to the Horned Frog 10, Miller found Aaron Roderick
slanting into the endzone for the score. KEY PLAYS: Miller to Cahoon for 25-yards.
BYU continues their 3rd Quarter dominance with another touchdown drive. Miller
connected with Cahoon for a 10-yard touchdown on the fade pattern. KEY PLAYS:
Miller-to-Cahoon for 41-yards, McKenzie 7-yard run on 3rd down.
4th Quarter
A punt-filled 4th Quarter finally got exciting when the Miller-to-Roderick combination
hooked up for a second touchdown strike, this one from 12-yards out. KEY PLAYS:
Miller-to-Cahoon for 16-yards, Dabney 14-yard run.
TCU adds a "garbage time" touchdown as Canine connects with Tavarus Moore for
the 4-yard touchdown score. KEY PLAYS: Canine to Michael Crawford for 14-yards.
