BYU 17, HAWAII 3
Provo, Utah -- The BYU offense continued to struggle in its
17-3 win over Hawaii. The Cougars managed just 242 total yards,
including a season-low 89 yards passing. The game plan going into
Saturday's contest was to grind down the clock with the rushing
game. As a result, senior tailback Brian McKenzie finished the game
with 30 attempts for 122 yards.
With starter Kevin Feterik sidelined for
anywhere from three to eight weeks with a foot fracture, the
quarterback duties against the Rainbow Warriors fell to one-time
starter Paul Shoemaker and freshman Drew Miller. Shoemaker
played the first half, and the pair traded off in the second,
finishing the game with a combined 10-of-22 for 89 yards, with two
interceptions and no touchdowns. "A win is a win," Shoemaker said.
"I think everybody is disappointed in the way we played, but we are
happy to get the win."
Miller got his chance to enter the game in the
third quarter after Shoemaker was sacked and knocked out on a
play that included an interception, a taunting penalty on Hawaii and
a trip for Shoemaker to the locker room to get six stitches in his
chin. "I thought the penalty was for a late hit and that we punted
after I left," Shoemaker said. "I didn't even see the interception."
Miller showed flashes of adequacy in going 3-for-7 for 23 yards.
After the win over Hawaii, an obviously
bothered coach LaVell Edwards bristled when he was asked to
assess the ongoing quarterback situation. "Neither have played much,
and that makes it hard. It's a struggle at quarterback and there is
not a simple solution. As I have said all along, we are going to do
anything we can to win," Edwards said. "Read whatever you want
into it, but I'm saying the same things I've said all year long. We
won and that is all that is important to me right now."
Hawaii did everything it could to avoid
throwing the ball in Omarr Morgan's direction. The lack of action on
his side of the field - only one pass in Morgan's direction, which he
almost intercepted - left the All-WAC corner twiddling his thumbs.
"I didn't do anything. Truthfully I was getting bored, but as long as
we win, the rest takes care of itself."
It took six games, but BYU finally got its first
interception of the season as Ben Cook snared an errant Hawaii pass
in the third quarter. "It had been a monkey on our back," Cook said.
"We were pretty disgusted about the fact. It felt really good to
finally get one."
Coach Edwards has been talking since the
preseason about the excitement freshman Jaron Dabney would
generate on special teams. It took six games for the speedy receiver
to make a statement, in the form of an 83-yard punt return for a
touchdown. "The special times got together and decided that we had
to do something electrifying. It is a big change going from high
school to college. I believe that six games is kinda good."
Watching film of last season's punt returner, James
Dye, has given Jaron Dabney inspiration: "I watched what he did
and told myself I was going to do as good as that." But the
relationship between Dabney and Dye goes deeper than old game
films. "He comes over to the house all the time. I cut his hair,"
Dabney said.

BYU - Hawaii Game Recap

1st Quarter
Hawai'i second punt early in the ballgame proved costly, as BYU's Jaron Dabney returned
it 83-yards for the touchdown. Dabney, a freshman from Texas, looked James Dye-like taking
a seam up the middle to go untouched into the endzone.
2nd Quarter
BYU continues a long drive that took up several minutes in the 1st Quarter with the
running game. After the Cougars are stopped on 3rd and 4, Owen Pochman connects from
42-yards out to extend BYU's lead. KEY PLAYS: 16-yard run by Brian McKenzie, 27-yard pass
from Paul Shoemaker to Ben Cahoon.
The Cougars continue to work on their rushing game in the 1st half. Brian McKenzie caps
off another BYU drive with a 5-yard run to the endzone. KEY PLAYS: Shoemaker to Cahoon for
19-yards, Shoemaker to Dabney for 6-yards.
Hawai'i puts together their first solid drive of the game driving the BYU 3. The drive
is stuffed there, however, and a 20-yard field goal try by Eric Hannum misses to keep the
Rainbows off the scoreboard. KEY PLAYS: 29-yard run by Calvin Mims.
3rd Quarter
An interception by the Rainbows Brian Chapman sets UH up at the BYU 31. Hawai'i manages
one first down but is stopped there. They settle for a 46-yard field goal by Hannum to cut
into the lead. KEY PLAYS: Runs of 6 and 5-yards by Charles Tharp.
BYU finally gets their first interception of season as Ben Cook picks off Josh Skinner.
BYU can't capitalize, however, and end up with a missed field goal. Freshman quarterback
Drew Miller is forced to replace an injured Paul Shoemaker.
4th Quarter
Both teams struggle to get anything going in the 4th Quarter. With six minutes left,
BYU finally gets a drive started from their own 45. The Cougars go for it on 4th-and-1
from the Rainbow 15, but don't get it and turn the ball over on downs.
Hawai'i drives inside the BYU 30, but fumbles the ball. Issiah Magalei recovers for the
Cougars to stop the Rainbows. BYU can't get a drive of their own going, though, and are
forced to punt once again.
