#24 BYU 42, USU 35
PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Paul Shoemaker came off the bench in the fourth quarter to lead No. 24
Brigham Young to two late touchdowns as the Cougars rallied for a 42-35 victory over Utah State
Saturday night.
Will Snowden's 2-yard run with 3:39 to play capped the second scoring drive engineered by
Shoemaker and gave the Cougars (3-1) an unexpectedly thrilling victory over their in-state rivals.
In a game played Friday night to avoid conflicting with the Mormon church's weekend conference in
Salt Lake City, the BYU defense stopped Utah State at the Cougars 17 in the final minutes to
preserve the win.
Shoemaker, benched by coach LaVell Edwards during BYU's season-opening loss to Washington,
entered Friday's game with 12:21 left in the fourth quarter and Utah State (2-3) ahead 32-27.
He immediately took the Cougars 93 yards for a touchdown in a four-play drive highlighted by a
screen pass that Dustin Johnson turned into a 65-yard gain to the Aggies 16. Shoemaker and Johnson
combined on a 16-yard touchdown pass on the next play with 11:33 remaining.
After a Utah State field goal, Shoemaker led the Cougars 69 yards to the game-winning score, with
the crucial play produced by his feet instead of his arm. With BYU facing third-and-9 at the Utah State
33, Shoemaker scrambled 18 yards for a first down, setting the stage for Snowden's TD.
Shoemaker's performance overshadowed a 345-yard passing evening by starter Kevin Feterik, who
threw for one touchdown and ran for one.
Freshman quarterback Brian Benza nearly became the hero for the Aggies after starter Matt Sauk was
injured while scrambling in the fourth quarter.
Benza drove Utah State to the game-tying field goal and moved the Aggies deep into Cougars territory
before throwing four incomplete passes from the BYU 17.
The Aggies (2-3), who haven't won in Provo since 1978, employed a wide-open offense similar to
BYU's famed set in the first half, attempting to exploit an injury-depleted Cougars secondary. Sauk
threw for 194 first-half yards, 165 to wideout Nakia Jenkins.
Utah State built a 24-10 lead midway through the second quarter when Jenkins romped 75 yards for a
touchdown.
But the Cougars rallied for 10 points in less than three minutes, and only a Utah State interception in
the end zone with two seconds left in the half allowed the Aggies to keep a 24-20 halftime lead.
A moment of silence was observed before the game in honor of Terrence Harvey, the BYU defensive
back who was killed Monday in an automobile accident. The Cougars wore black patches on their
helmets in Harvey's honor.

1st Quarter
Following a USU punt to begin the game, BYU took over near mid-field to start their
scoring drive. A holding penalty backed the Cougars into a 3rd-and-goal from the 16-yard
line, but Kevin Feterik found an open lane to run for the score. KEY PLAYS: Dustin Johnson
17-yard run, Feterik to Ben Cahoon for 8-yards.
Utah State marches right back going 85-yards for the touchdown. Matt Sauk hit Adrion
Pierson for the 27-yard TD. KEY PLAY: Sauk to Nakia Jenkins for 36-yards.
A BYU fumble on their own 16 led to another quick Aggie score. Demario Brown found the
endzone from 3-yards out to put USU on top. KEY PLAY: Sauk 7-yard run.
The Cougars answer with a 44-yard field goal from Owen Pochman after a long drive. KEY
PLAYS: D. Johnson 15-yard run, Feterik to Roderick for 9 yards.
2nd Quarter
On a 4th-and-5, USU elects to go for it and converts the first down. That leads to a
25-yard field by Brad Bohn. KEY PLAYS: Sauk to Jenkins for 30-yards and 13-yards.
Another BYU fumble gives the Aggies the ball on their own 25. It takes only one play
for Utah State to get on the board again as Sauk hits Jenkins for the 75-yard touchdown.
The Cougars come back once again, this time on 3rd-and-18 Feterik hits Cahoon for 47
yards to the Aggie 1. Brian McKenzie dove in for the score on the next play. KEY PLAYS:
Cahoon from Feterik for 23 yards, Feterik to R. J. Anderson for 11 yards.
Utah State blows a punting situation and turns the ball over to the Cougars on the 16.
BYU is forced to settle for a 40-yard Pochman field goal after a Aggie sack.
With eight seconds left in the half, BYU had the ball on the Aggie 13. An interception
ended the drive, though, and Utah State kept the lead going into halftime.
3rd Quarter
BYU opens the second half with a touchdown drive, capped by Feterik to Anderson for the
10-yard score. KEY PLAYS: Two passes to D. Johnson for first downs, Feterik to Aaron Cupp
for 32 yards.
A mishandled snap on the punt for BYU leads to a safety. Utah State blocked the punt
out of the endzone for the score.
On 3rd-and-22, Sauk finds Brown for the 50-yard touchdown. KEY PLAY: Fake punt for a
first down.
4th Quarter
A 70-yard kickoff return by Jaron Dabney sets BYU up at the Aggie 30. Three plays
later, though, Feterik is picked off again to stop the Cougar drive.
Following a Utah State punt, new BYU quarterback Paul Shoemaker leads the Cougars to a
touchdown. Dustin Johnson rumbles in from 18-yards out on a pass from Shoemaker. KEY PLAY:
A 65-yard pass from Shoemaker to Johnson.
An injury to USU quarterback Matt Sauk sends new QB Brian Benton into the game. Benton
promptly leads the Aggies to a field goal by Bohn. KEY PLAYS: 19-yard scramble by Benton,
18-yard by Brown.
BYU takes the lead with just over three minutes left in the game. Will Snowden took the
ball in from 2-yards out. KEY PLAYS: Shoemaker 18-yard run, Snowden 13-yard run, personal
foul facemask penalty on the Aggies.
After both teams punt, USU's Smith takes the screeen pass 45-yards to the BYU 17. The
Aggies can't convert, however, and turn the ball over on downs to wrap things up.
