BYU Upsets #14 Arizona State, 13 - 10

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Beware of Brigham Young coming off a bye week. No. 14 Arizona State learned that the hard way Saturday night.

Freshman Owen Pochman, shrugging off two earlier misses and a block, kicked a 32-yard field goal with 4:39 remaining to give the Cougars a 13-10 upset of the Sun Devils.

It was BYU's first victory in Tempe since 1965 and only its sixth in a 26-game series that started in 1935.

The Cougars are now 18-6 in games the week after a bye, and coach LaVell Edwards had his team ready after a 42-20 loss to Washington in the Sept. 6 opener.

``In all the years I've been coaching, I don't think I've ever been more proud of a group of players,'' said Edwards, who is in his 26th season at BYU. ``They overcame tremendous adversity. I can't be more pleased with the way we hung in there.''

Sophomore Kevin Feterik, making his first career start, calmly directed the Cougars (1-1) 77 yards in 10 plays to get Pochman into field-goal range.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Kealy, who led the defending Pac-10 champions to a 23-12 upset at Miami last weekend, couldn't pull off a miracle this time for Arizona State (2-1).

He was sacked for a 6-yard loss on third-and-10 at the Arizona State 28 and the Sun Devils had to punt with 3:55 to play.

They got it back at their 20 with 2:22 left but Kealy threw four consecutive incompletions.

BYU took over at the Arizona State 33 with 1:50 remaining and ran out the clock for its eighth straight road win but first over a Pac-10 opponent in 10 tries.

``They had an extra week to get ready for us,'' said Sun Devils coach Bruce Snyder. ``They were fresh and they were ready. I was worried about them all week.''

Kealy wound up 12-of-29 for 153 yards and was sacked four times as Arizona State was held to 92 yards rushing on 40 carries.

``Coming off that Washington game, we were really disappointed in our run defense,'' Edwards said. ``Tonight, we wanted to shut down the run and make that freshman of theirs pass.''

Feterik, a left-hander who resembles former Cougars star Steve Young with his scrambling ability, completed 17-of-30 for 328 yards despite getting sacked five times.

Eight of the passes went to Ben Cahoon for 219 yards with Brian McKenzie rushing 23 times for 112 yards and BYU's lone touchdown.

``We had a lot of broken plays, but that opened things up for me,'' Feterik said. ``This is one of the biggest road wins we've ever had.''

BYU appeared headed for the go-ahead score midway through the third quarter only to have McKenzie fumble at the Sun Devils 2. Linebacker Stephen Trejo recovered at the 3.

Feterik kept the next drive alive with scrambling throws of 24 and 18 yards to Cahoon, getting the Cougars within field goal distance.

But Arizona State tackle Albrey Battle batted down Pochman's 30-yard try with 20 seconds left.

``I was just glad I had a chance to win the game,'' said Pochman. ``I just thought of getting that last kick off nice and smooth. I didn't want to crush it. I thought to myself, `This is what I'm here for.'''

The Sun Devils were fortunate just to be in a 10-10 tie at halftime.

Pochman missed field goal tries of 42 and 48 yards in the first quarter and Aaron Roderick's fumble of a punt at the Cougars 13 set up the only Sun Devils touchdown.

Mike Martin's 1-yard plunge with 9:57 left in the half put Arizona State ahead 10-7, but a fumble gave BYU its chance to tie.

On a double reverse, Ricky Boyer lost the ball after a 19-yard run and Jack Williams recovered at the Cougars 33.

Feterik ducked a rush and threw a 35-yard pass to Cahoon to the Arizona State 31, setting up Pochman's 45-yard field with 4:35 remaining in the half.

Robert Nycz's 44-yarder late in the first quarter had given the Sun Devils a 3-0 lead.

McKenzie's 6-yard run capped an 80-yard drive to put BYU up 7-3 on the first play of the second quarter.

Both teams then exchange punts to take the game to halftime.

3rd Quarter

BYU begins the 3rd quarter by driving the ASU 2-yard line. The drive is stopped there on a fumble by Brian McKenzie.

After the teams exchanged punts, another ASU punt got a BYU drive started. Two long passes from Feterick to Cahoon and a 26-yard McKenzie run set BYU up at the ASU 13. The drive stalled once again and Arizona State blocked a field goal attempt.
